VE coils!
VE coils!
Anyone have some extra coils around i could borrow just to see if its whats wrong with my car. Id pay for shipping and maybe a renting fee or somthing. Id rather borrow some that work first and make sure its my problem than buy new ones. Were can i buy them the cheapest?

I sooooo want NOT to believe you. heh! Boy, if my performance really would improve from what my car feels like now, that would be fantastic.
Can you go over some things that lead you to believe that they are going out? I remember you had the snap on device to measure the resistance of the working coil. Anything I can do in lieu of such a device like the snap on?

dude, if your coils have more than 70k miles on them, then they should be replaced. Trust me you'll see a big difference in POWER

Jeff is right. When my car was running really shiety. I went to the dealer, and they told me it was the coils(This is when I knew nothing about Maximas) So $450 later on parts, I felt no change and then I had 155k on the car. It ended up being the cat coverter, which the stupid Nissan mechanics didnt even point at, but they were quick to say detonation sensor, coils, this and that. But I do have 6 coils that were from my car, I just kept the new ones on, but I dont know at $450 for all 6, I wouldnt feel comfortable "renting" them to someone I do not know.
Well ive been having problems with my car lately. The dealer says either my coils are bad and spiking my ecu or my ecu is bad. Jeff maybe you can help me out, i just noticed this today installing my a/f gauge. The connection from the harness goes White-Black-Red and the new O2 sensor goes Black-White-Red. Is this wrong? Only the red connections look right!
dmontzmax- would you let me get them off you, if they fix my problem i buy them, if not you give me my money back? Were did u pay 450, u can get them 54 each from courtesy i think.

Let me say this, I highly doubt it is the coils, they last a very long time. Also, you should take your car to a little gas station and let them look at it. That is the kind of place that solved my problem, not the dealer. What exactly is it doing anyways?
This is the thread ive got most replys.

After I replaced my coils the motor pulls real easy up to readline (effortlessly) before it did not, and I replaced mine around 70k.
Replacing ignition coils is apart of a regular 60-80k tune-up. Our coils run way hotter (coil over plug) than domestic coil packs leading to a shorter life. Replacing coils for domestic cars is a normal service job.
The reason nissan jumped on the coils and the knock sensor is b/c they know from experience EXACTLY what is common to go wrong. but of course they should run full diagnostics, which I do not know if they are competant enough to evaluate.

Hmm mine pulls to redline pretty easy now. But I have 135k on my engine. I wouldn't doubt that maybe some are marginal. But I don't want to replace them just based on that. I didn't see any change interval mentioned in my service manual. Maybe I missed it?

Well i guess im out $400 for coils then, maybe it will fix the problem, if not ill use them when i do a custom rebuild on another 3rd gen.
But i have checked resistence and theres no blue sparks jumping around like ive read about!

but check these guys out, they posted in group deals, see what kinda price they can get you: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=64024
Jeff, I wouldnt be surprised if alot of the coils were in good shape, but the insulation (I forgot the materials that they use) well thats whats going to insulate the high voltage from jumping across inside the intake to ground. You can actually inspect them for carbon tracking. Remmove the coil and look for some streaking going across or up and down the coil, they may also branch out, or more commonly tunnel out (just a small area that is darker than the rest) this is where the high voltage gets out, causeing the engine to miss.

I got the 3 front coil packs from Autozone here in Dallas, for $293.00
that is for cylinders 4,5,and 6. All three were cracked, I'm still going to replace 1,2, and 3 but hadn't had the cash or time yet, but it definetly ran better. From what I understand coils for 1,2,and 3 run hotter and tend to go out more often than the others. I can get them from O'reilly auto for about $52 bucks a piece.
If you are not around an Autozone or O'reilly get them from Courtesy but if your area has an Autozone or O'reilly get them from them, it is the exact same ones that you would get from Courtesy but cheaper.
When I did the plugs, I cleaned the coils and inspected them for cracks but didn't take a real close look for the tracking you mention. I'll have to pop a few out and take a real close look.
