Hmm....thinking about cutting my A/C belt.....

My A/C doesn't work. I'm gonna have it inspected. The compressor does NOT turn on. I think its the problem. Last time my a/c acted up, the condenser was shot, and it was out of refrigerant, but the compressor still kicked on, even with no/low refrigerant. It was fine for 2 years or so, now the compressor won't come on. If it has a $$$ fix, I'm not doing it. I live in Buffalo. Its Hot from June-Mid aug. Then its cold. I have NO use for the a/c in the winter. Hell, below 32 they don't kick on anyway.

Long winded as always, So.....I think I may cut the belt. Why not get a few hp boost from something that is just sitting there.

Am I nuts?

Most people just loosen it then take it off. So at the very most you are nuts for wasting whatever the belt costs if you ever wanted to put it back on.

The air conditioner system is equiped with a low pressure switch. if you are too low on freon then the compressor will not switch on. this could be your problem.

take the belt off properly, dont be lazy and cut off.

If you want to check your comperssor to see if it works bypass the low pressuer switch for a second its located infront of your battery under the relay box for the drivinglights and such. Just jump the two wires with a paperclip or something and you can tell if your compressor kicks in or not

i had my belt off for a while, cause the last one broke and i was like "wow that sucks" and just waited for my udp to come in. honestly, i noticed little to no gains, but hey, if your AC doesn't work anyway, it can't hurt!

Also if you ran the ac low for a long time, the compressor might be frozen. Low ac level = no lubrication for the compressor bearings. Take off the belt and see if the pulley turns by hand. If not, it's probably fried. Also if you lose your ac, you lose the dryer affect that works w/ your defroster.

You don't actually gain anything by not having it work, it just frees up some that's already taken...
I know it makes no difference, but I feel smarter already

just a note on why you want A/C even in a cold climate: because when your windows fog up, switching it on clears everything much faster. but if its dead as in not coming back ever, then remove the whole system.
