transmision locking up?

ok i did the search and found one that matched this subject but it disintergrated into another topic, lol. I heard there were a couple other people that had the same problem with the auto tranny locking into 3 gear after the tires spun out on ice or gravel. And the only way to cure the problem was to turn the car off then on. What gives, is it a transmision safety lock up or what? Thanks for any info.

happen to me

using an e-brake rutn and/or doing emergency breaking( i mean hitting the pedel hard) when i pressed the gas the car litteraly took for ever to move, and never shifted... I was soo ****ed/scared that i broke my tranny.. When i turned it off and then on the max was back to norm.. OK for those with answers why its a safe mode pls explain... So two thing.. try not to e-brake in hard turns(spinning 90-360 degrees) or stopping hard and abrubt
