how many miles does the avg third gen last for, and for everyone that modded their 3rd gens, how many miles would you say there would have to be on it before you would say ok its not worth it to mod?

it's all a matter of hose much you want to spend and how well you (and the previous owners) maintain(ed) the car.

what do you mean by how long they "last" for? do you mean transmission, do you mean engine? its a very vague question youre asking. maybe if you give us the reason why youre asking, like if youre trying to buy a max with a lot of highway miles on it or something, we could give you some advice. but i think your question cant be answered.

depends on how it has been taken care of. I think Matt93se has got a whole lotta miles on his car. My dad's was at 160k before we sold it.

The auto trannies last anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 but depend on how well they were maintained. The VG engine can run strong all the way up to 400,000 miles, someone on this board has one with 400K, with the engine it varies dramtically but the average is probably around 220,000 for a VG. VE's are don't go quite as long as the VG, but are still very long lasting engines.

It is impossible for any of us to give you a reliable answer based upon the available information.

The longevity of your car is dependant upon many things. One of the most important is how often the oil has been changed. You have several seals that need to be replaced every 60k miles. Front main, camshaft, possibly rear main. You have the input seals on the tranny. Timing belt, hoses, C.V boots...

If your car is an automagic, you might have 30k miles left before you have to replace the transmission. The 3rdGen automatics, especially the 89-91s, are notorious for weak transmissions. Adding horsepower through mods will only kill a weak tranny more quickly.

I bought my '91 SE Auto at 110k miles. It was a solid car but need maintenance. I had the radiator hoses replaced, the accessory belts, timing belt, tensioner, water pump, thermostat, front main seal, camshaft seals, alternator, battery, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, battery, speed sensor, power steering boots, and the A.C recharged all in the past year and a quarter. I also changed the transmission fluid twice.

I added a tranmsission cooler, front strut tower bar, braided steel brake lines, tokico struts, eibach springs, drilled front rotors, and PFC pads for the front/metal master for the rear.

My car now has 135k miles on it and it runs fine. It does need to have new motor mounts and the exhaust studs drilled out and replaced. However, this is not life threatening.

To sum up this long post, it is safe to modd you car with 145k miles on it. Make sure the maintenance is done. It is easier to keep up with than to let it go. If you don't, you will probably end up walking at an inconvient time.

I modded my car to make it safer. (brakes and handling) I need to itlast for 3 or 4 more years and I need to be safe. VG autos are very slow. Spending $500 on exhaust and intake work won't change that. It will just wear out your tranny faster.

Okay, I am done babbling. Bedtime for me....

i had around 200k when i sold mine and my tranny was almost gone. I started with 107k and with the mods i had the engine ran strong just to strong for the transmission.
