My Max (91SE auto) has about 167k on it and the engine rattles real laud every time it accelerates, not just when it's cold. I can here it clearly even on highway at 70-80mph. It's fine when just cruising. This happened after I replaced the front exhaust pipe and rebuilt the tranny at about the same time. (It rattled before as well, but no where near this laud now). If I leave the car in park or neutral, there will be no rattle sound enven if I step on the pedal hard. So I think it might not be from the engine. Could it be the exhaust? Any one has similar problem or know what is happening?

 

Check your exhaust manifold mounting studs as a start.
