power loss

I'm taking it in tommorrow. Hopfully answers will be had. My buddy has a supra turbo. He was experiencing power loss accompanied by engine light. Turns out, it was a sensor that sets the timing off to compensate for engine knock. Unfortunately there was no engine knock, just faulty wiring leading up to the sensor. It was rewired with a specific gauge wire from radio shack, and it was running like new. The reason I went on about this story is, it seems like with all these stupid variables it could be anything. Bad wires? Who knows maybe it a loose bolt sensor that holds the mud flap on. I'll keep you posted. I want a fast 5 speed not just a showpiece. LOL

Power loss reason (92-94 SE VE30DE)

The reason the 92-94 SE model Maximas have the strange power loss (or surge) is because of the ill-fated VTC system. Over time, the VTC controllers deteriorate to the point where they cannot control the instake camshafts very well. This allows the cams to advance/retard when the car is warmed up. You'll hear it as an audible clacking at idle. Allowing the cams to advance/retard at random times, this causes fluctuations in power.

there are a couple ways to fix it.
1) Shell out the big bucks and get new VTC assemblies installed ($1000+)
2) Get your current VTC assemblies rebuilt (mostly labor- $$500+)
3) Disable the VTC system by grounding the input wire. Although this kills off about 15-20 hp at the high end (4500-6500rpm), it gets rid of the power surging and clacking noise. This only costs $5 for parts and you can do it yourself VERY easily. This procedure is listed in detail on Craig Brace's page at: http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte671n/mymax.html

Good luck with your cars. I am finding out all this information as I go also. Eventually I will look into rebuilding my VTC's when I get some more moolah

Again, if the VTC ground mod is switching off, low end should suffer and high end should be okay. Depends on how it's rigged. And rebuilt VTCs are a 50/50 deal. TRUST ME! One "rebuilt" failed on me 3-4 months after the good for nothing Nissan mechanic(aka monkey headed dumbass) thought he knew what he was doing. I would get only new VTC assemblies and make sure you clean out the oil gallies for the vtc feed and the chain tensioner. And if you wanna try this fix yourself, check my sig. You don't have to take the engine out but you get the idea. Mark EVERYTHING or else your ****outaluck.

VTC ground

true, it makes sense that the low end power should suffer, but in reality, it's the opposite. Good low-end torque, surge of power at 3500 when the intake chamber opens, then it peters out above 4500 a bit.

Re: VTC ground

Again depends on what the ground does exactly. Have you found that out??
