Clutch diagnosis
OK here goes..About a year ago I put a clutch in my 89 SE. Borg and Beck, or something like that, relatively cheap OEM replacement, I had very little funds. About 3 months ago, something in there (release bearing?) started to squeak (like a tinny thin metal squeak). It would come an go..if if tapped the clutch pedal, it would go away. It was intermittent, squeaking more on cooler days..hot days it would me silent most of the time. If it squeeked, tap the pedal a few times and it would go away. Recently it progressed, and now I can hear it as a more constant noise If I listen close, like parked between large SUV's to block outside noise. Beacuse of the variance with temp and the fact that I could make it go away with a few taps of the pedal, my bet was on the release bearing starting to go due to lack of lubrication...tapping the pedal spread baout whatever grease was there, as did the higher temps. Also for some reason it squeaked less when it rained. So in summary, squeeked only when the clutch was engaged (pedal out, in neutral or maybe gear, but couldn't tell). As soon as I put slight pressure on the clutch pedal, it would quiet down. My concern is this..I had a similar problem when I first bought the car, but the noise was much not as tinny/squeaky and turned out to be the input shaft bearing. I would like some opinions on this...number one, is that release bearing spinning with the clutch oout (no pressure on the pedal)? I was told a while back that release bearings only make noise when pressure is on them, and that's when your foot is on the clutch. What do you guys and gals think? Thanks for the help in advance.

when my release bearing went, it only made noise when I had my foot off the pedal.
if the bearing part itself is messed up, it'll make noise when your foot's on the pedal.
if the case on the bearing is messed up (i.e. the outside case of the bearing fell apart, as has been the problem in the 3 bearings that have gone bad on my various cars) then you'll only hear things with your foot off the pedal.
I also noticed that the pedal was "crunchy" when I moved the clutch in and out. i.e. it wasn't a smooth engagement.

Maybe your clutch wasn't adjusted right and the TO bearing is constanly turning and it blew all the lube out of it. Dunno

Look under your dash at the clutch master cylinder rod. It's threaded w/ a jamb nut. If someone screwed with that when the clutch was old, it might be misadjusted now.

I don't think our clutches are adjustable..Hydraulic basically adjusts itself..can bleed it and adjust pedal, that's all..look where the piston touches the fork..with foot off pedal, piston doesn't even touch.
