AT Fluid Capacity

Hello Friends. Manual for my 98 SE calls out 7.75 Quarts of AT Fluid capacity. I drained my tranny from the drain plug and filled w/said amount and obviously way overfull (almost out of pipe). I drained a couple of quarts and now it measures fine but I am still confused. Am I OK cuz it's measuring fine or am I low because I know I have less in than stated capacity. As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

welcome to the fine world of maxima.org
you're a owner of a 4th gen maxima.

now to your question...
you should check fluid while the car is running at idle. if you filled it too much then drain it out until it reaches the correct level...(which you did). if you're at the correct level then you're good to go. when u drain the fluid not ALL of the fluid will come out. a lot of fluid is still in the torque convertor..so that's why u overfilled it.

keep in mind this is the 3rd gen section...more people can help u on 4th gen or in general section about your particular car.

Thank you. That makes sense.

Actually my car is an 89, not a 98....sorry for the mixup.

Anyway, if my intent was to "service" the transmission by replacing the fluid and it's not possible to drain all the fluid (as you have stated), have I accomplished my objectives (mixing the new fluid w/some of the old?) Or do I need to drain the torque converter?

Thank you

ahhh ok...89 - 98..big diff.
well you can drain and fill and repeat for 3 times..but that's waisting a lot of ATF. drive for a month..drain and fill it again. do that another 2-3 times..and you should be all set.

ORRR...you can go to a shop that has runs a flush machine and it replaced all the fluid from the tranny with new fluid.

There's no way to drain the torque covertor, get a full flush.
