Battery indicator lighting up..

I have a 91 GXE and the battery indicator light is occasionally coming on and off. It lights up dimly and when I come to a complete stop at a light it gets brighter. THe brake indicator light also occasionally comes on when this happens. I was thinking it could be the alternator but I just got it changed last year. My stereo doesn't take much power (150 x 2 rms, 1 farad capacitor) and I don't have any other electric components plugged in. THe only other thing that may draw extra power is that i rewired my corner lights to have both filaments in my bulbs lit when I turn my headlights on. Anyone experienced this and know how to fix?

the exact same thing happened on my se-r. turned out to be the alternator. my max had the same symptoms but the same lights were on constantly. that was my O2 sensor. good luck. maybe you should take your alternator to a place where they do free testing.

sounds like a bad alternator. I recommend taking it to someone that rebuilds starters and alternator it will be cheaper. Just because the alternator is new doesn't mean that it is good.

Thanks for the advice. I hope it wasn't the mechanic that messed with it the other day. I got two new tires and a exhaust pipe changed and it only started happening the day after that. The light turned off now but it will probably come on again.. i checked the battery and it still gives 12-14 volts.. is there a way to check the alternator myself? i can't trust mechanics..

your best bet is to take the car to a parts store and have them test it.. they roll out a tester that hooks up to the battery and can put up to 700A fo draw on the system at a time.. it will be able to tell if you've got a bad battery, alternator, etc.. and they'll tell you where to go from there.

if the alternator is bad and only a year old, you should be able to get it replaced udner warranty. the replacement itself isn't bad. takes me about 15 minutes. probably take an "average" person about an hour.

How long would that take on my 94?
