idling at diff. rpms in P than in D

when i start my car in the morning after it has sat outside through the night, the rpms jump to about 1200-1500 upon start up, and idle at about that as long as the car is in P. as soon as i shift it into D (or R), the rpms drop to about 6-800, and the car makes a pretty irritating clanking sort of noise when it does it. i'm not sure why it does this, or if it is even cause for concern, but i figured i'd see what anyone else had to say. any info?

thanks
NICK

how long does it stay at 1200-1500 if you leave it in park? It should idle a little high at first then after it warms up some it will go down. I dont know about the clanking but it sounds like maybe the motor mount is wore and since the motor is reving high it yanks it when you shift into gear.

Yeah, its normal to idle high during a cold start-up. You should really let the engine warm up, the idle will drop down (to around 1000). There is a wax pellet that contracts when the engine is cold and then expands when it warms up. This allows more air during cold warm ups and then when the pellet expands it closes down the opening in the Idle Control.

My car makes a vibrating (clanking?) noise when I put it in drive, but its from the hood vibrating. I don't know if that's the problem that you have. Does anyone have an idea of how I could stop my hood from vibrating?

Dude, I think the Idle Air control valve uses electrical signal from the ECU to control idle (bypass) air. Things like collant temp sensor, TPS etc let the ECU know what to tell the AIC..pretty sure there is no wax pellet in our VG motors..older VG's used a reed valve to allow idle air in.

I had the same problem, all you have to do is replace the rubber supports that it sits on. Mine were really worn out and one was gone.

Wow, so I assume you don't own a FSM

Or you own one, and have never opened it?

Yup I said wax pellet, and its in the IACV, and it provides additional air, with the use a wax pellet piston, that allows more air during cold temps, and then it closes when the engine reaches near operating temps. It is seperate from the idle control motor, which pulses a spring loaded piston via a magnetic field.

The ignorance level is high

I'll scan the page or quote it later on. It's got a nice image of the IACV and a descrition.

Dan, I think you should stick to threads that says.....
-What tire press should I use
-Consistent use of 89 octane
-What mods are availale for my max (common reply "please use the search function")

and the sort

OK, no I don't own an FSM. Wax pellet huh. Not that I doubt you, but I never heard of such technology before. I always thought that it was the motor that controlled bypass air. very interesting. Is the wax pellet that little sphere in the IAC? I saw it when I cleaned the thing..must be one helluva strong wax!

FAILURE TO READ CORRECTLY IS NOT MY FAULT
i said WHAT WAX PELLET...i never said you were wrong...i wanted to know LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION. quite defensive aren't we?

"male" said there's no wax pellet..and he quoted me..so i told him to quote you...now get it straight damnit!

u should stick to learn how to read threads.

oh and ..USE THE SEARCH FUNCTION GOONS!

Sorry DanNY..I didn't mean to quote you, you probably knew that already. Now take a few deep breaths, count back from ten, relax. Ok now that we feel better, WAX PELLET??
