how to install a new starter

I own a 91 SE automatic. During the winter months my starter would make that familiar griding noise when I started the car. Now that its summer the noise has gone away but I know I should replace the starter before the cold weather returns. Is there any on-line tutorial for this? Is this particualarly hard on this model?

thanks in advance!

The $20 it costs for a Chilton or Haynes manual is well worth it. I suggest you get one. On-line tutorials would be limited to personal web pages..Haynes and Chilton would go out of business if this kind of service existed..It would be cool though..

starter is extremely easy anyway.
disconnect battery.
remove plastic engine bay cover under the starter.
disconnect wires from starter.
remove bolts on starter.
remove from car.
installation is reverse of above.

It's a very simple job, the starter is located on the front of the transmission with only two bolts holding it on.

A related question. UDP is my next mod. I have read that in order to remove the pulley, I need to pull the starter and jam a screwdriver in the teeth of the flywheel. I have also read to use a "chain type wrench" to hold the pulley in place. (I have a slushbox)

What is the best way to do this?

Don't know specifically on a Max, but I've pulled the crankshaft pulley off my wife's Minivan ('94 Mercury Villager, aka Nissan Quest). I used a nylon strap-type oil filter wrench to grip the crank pulley while loosening the crank bolt. Other than a little awkward trying to pull on two wrenches on two separate items, this worked great, with no problems at all.

Good Luck,

Kirk

If the starter is located at 12 O'clock on the tranny(auto), it's a little harder to get at the bolts. You have to remove some of the intake parts etc.. But shouldn't be brain sugery. Nice first diy. If you have the 5-sp, it's ALOT easier. It's located 7 O'clock and it's right in the open.

$20?! HA!
and Bill does like me better. I did more work on his car than you did. (even though I was half asleep and took 5 x longer than it should have!)
