Fire around coil - need help

My 1992 GXE suddenly lost power on the way home from work. I saw smoke coming out of the hood and luckily had a fire extingusher to put out a 6 inch flame that appeared to be coming from the coil. I just got the car towed home. The car seems to be minimally damaged, but the coil wires, cover and coil are all burned together. Could the coil catch fire? Is it likely that replacing the coil and wires will solve my problem? I have never heard of coils catching fire. There was no gasoline smell and the car ran fine until it died. Any Help would be most appreciated.
