Fuel injector question?

As a fairly new member, I am seeing that fuel injectors are a common theme. I recently purchased my 90 GXE and am finding that I currently have a problem with my max "missing". I have put new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor button and the max is still missing. I have consulted my mechanic and he thinks that it may be fuel injectors or maybe a valve. He has to do a compression check tomorrow. However, he tells me that if it is a valve, then I am looking at a very expensive repair. On the other hand, if it is a fuel injector, than the damage is less. Can anyone give me any input into the common fuel injector problem, and if this is the problem, how much can I expect to pay. Thanks everyone.

if it is valve it goes for about 1500 for a new head, quoted from pep boys where i live. Fuel injectors run about 120$ new per injector, remans are about half of that. labor varies widely.. 140$ ~2hrs for labor is a decent price. I got fed up with mechanics so I ended up doing the replacement myself with some help from the forum guys. Just letting you know your options.
