Don't drive till your tank is dry
I would certainly not recommend that the Maximas not be driven till the gas tank is almost empty. I will explain why.
Pump gas (all of them) contain sediments which act as stabilizers and these sediments collect on the bottom of your gas tank. If you would run your tank dry, you will then be introducing these gunky substances into your fuel sytem........and that includes fuel lines and filter.
It is always a very good idea to keep your gas tank full as much as possible. This will also prevent from water vapors from entering and forming, especially if you pump in oxygenated gas.
So, please don't run your tank dry....not even to check whether or not that stupid light will come on.

I don't think mine works either. I have an 89 max, 4 doors. Everytime I come to the E, I'm always waiting for the warning light to go on. Will it ever? Should I keep on driving and see if the light comes on?

My gas light works...I think. It's only come on 2 times in 3 years, then again I always fill up at 1/4 tank.

If your 02 sensor is bad...
it will suck down gas mileage...but so will a lot of things Id start at 02 sensor though. im not sure if the throttle position sensor could cause it or not. But wouldnt be a bad idea to check it too. A haynes manual would tell u how to do that.
