Im a VE'r but i was just thinking, it seems like a few of you are having cap + rotors go, and others have just replaced the whole thing to get a cleaner spark.

have any of you considered the MSD or Jacobs spark enhancement moduales or the little blocks that you put in and it will give you a very noticable difference in power, economy and response. i forgot the names and all, but i was looking at them when i was in my "truck phase" of buying a car. check out www.summitracing.com for them among others. its just a tip, this could be old news, but then again i havent seen anyone talk about them so i figure why not, maybe if a majority of you guys didnt know about them, you can try this and rack up some ponies, few miles and get that VG feeling somewhat like a VE (not really though).

if anyone has done this, please share, i would like to know how it worked out and im sure that others would too. i think that it would be a beneficial mod to the car.

do a search there are a few guys on here with them....these are "piggy-back" boxes, so they don't replace the entire ignition system, they run in conjuction with the OEM system. I know one has the Jacobs ICE Pac and another has the Jacobs Pro STreet...the results tend to be only slight performance improvement, other than THE MAX who benefited more since he's also running nitrous. but on an NA car I think if combined with soem sort of fuel management you might see some decent gains....and BTW MSD does not make any caps, rotors or any distributor parts for our cars!

me still likes chevy 350 and more the Dodge 318 <- thats my favorite motor, but the 340 is still really sweet, ohhhhhh rumble.

 

Jacob's actually makes a model that upgrades any car with a distributor, to a distributorless ignition. I HIGHLY recommend Jacob's ignition. I have had nothign but great things from them!! Take a look at their website http://www.jacobselectronics.com/

I don't think so....if you are talking about the D.I.S that is for cars without OEM distributors(most newer moels that use coil packs) and it enables them to use one ignition system with their multiple OEM coil packs....I don't think anyone has made a distributor to DIS conversion kit...other than maybe the stand-alone Tec II, Electromotive, etc. units, but thats BIG bucks right there!

 

Get the jacobs ice pak, I love mine it helps save gas in the lower rpm range in normal driving and when you get on the cas you can feel the gains in performance, such as acceleration and torque! If you dont at least have these mods you want really feel any difference;cai,
Ypipe, hiflow cat, and performance clutch & flywheel. I plan to do a complete NA engine block upgrade in the near future UDP, pistons cams
forged crank, ECU upgrade, ect.., Iknow with the nos I just recently installed the gains will excellent!

I have the Jacobs Pro Street Ignition and I know it has at the least helped on the gas mileage. I recently made 500.4 miles on one tank of gas although I usually average about 400-450 miles before I break down and head to the pumps.

As for Performance I think its definitly benificial but as to how much I couldn't say. I'm no expert with the butt dyno and I haven't taken it to the shop. Jacobs will give quotes and gurantee something like 10 or 15 percent gains on hp or torque. I think they are an honest company but their claims are probably on the high side.

I have a Crane HI-6 ignition amplifier, a Crane PS92 race coil, Magnecor KV85 8.5 mm spark plug wires, and a set of Denso Iridium spark plugs. The whole set up works really nicely especially when I'm on the nitrous

Maximapwr that is a sweet engine bay, if you want a few pointers on how to hide the your nos give me a line! I have perfected the hiding of the nos the only way to tell its in my car is to get under the car and look up, and thats hard to do since my car is dropped now! Kudos sweet azz ride!

 

ah, i looked at your site again, it was your car that i saw had ignition stuff done to it. yeah, that is a sweet car. lots of time put into that and well paid off.

I bought the Jacobs ignition about four or five years ago for my NA '89 VG. I don't know how long the org has been around but if I would have had this resource back then I would have spent the money on a Y-pipe and a UDP instead the the Jacobs ignition. I didn't notice ANY increase in power or throttle response - NONE. There might have been an improvement in gas mileage - I didn't check that because that isn't what I bought it for - the sales guy at Jacobs promised an improvement in power and throttle response and that's what I wanted. What I did notice is that my radio sounded like I had changed to copper core wires - very annoying. I felt dumb enough about my purchase that I left the system on for a couple of years, suffering every day with the static on the radio. When I took it off, I noticed NO decrease in power or throttle response. If any one wants one I'll sell mine to you - cheap.

I plan on fitting a Bosch Motronic engine management system (not sure what version) whenever I get all the serious mods done on my VG (bolt-ons, cams, pistons, etc.). Though, that's opening a friggin' CASE of "worms" as far as tuning is concerned. Hehe, I'll probably be tuning that for years before I get it done properly. Though, once it's properly tuned it should perform amazing and be much more trouble free. This project will probably take me years since I have yet to even get many serious mods done.
