Air Condition Problems
Air Condition Problems
My girlfriend has a '97 GLE with 75K miles. She just bought the car and is having problems with the A/C.
It seems that when she turns it on the clutch does not engage. The system just blows warm air. Usually by turning it off and waiting 10 seconds will activate it. Sometimes it takes several attempts to get it to blow cold.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

The A/C button might not be making a good connection. I don't know if it's possible to take it out and get some contact cleaner sprayed in it or not. Don't wait the 10 seconds, just play with the button a bit. If you hear the compressor clutch click in when you fidget the button around, you've found your problem!
Other reasons...
Too high and too low levels of refrigerant will cause the compressor to cut out.
Have you recharged it recently? I did and actually put a little too much in. I bled the excess and now it's blowing cold again.
If you have a Haynes it tells you how to bridge the pressure switch on the receiver/dryer. If you override this switch and your compressor fires up without problem, then it's likely your refrigerant is out of range.
