Engine Retard Devices for the VQ...

What kind of options are there for retarding the VQ if you're running boost? I know there is the J&S Safeguard that you manually adjust and senses knock, or you can find a 95-96 ECU to be reprogrammed. Does anyone know of other products that could retard VQ timing? There is a MSD Digital Multi-retard and a Boost Master from Jacobselectronics. Would any of these work? The max has individual coils so I don't know if these could be used. What devices are people using for engine control? I will not be using a S-AFC, either. I'll be building a turbo and I want to make sure it is done right. I'm not going to cut corners like many other people do, so any info. would be appreciated

MSD and Jacobs dont work on our cars because we have a six coil distributorless ignition system with coil pack igniters built into the coil packs, their is no way known to make these work.

Yea, I thought so. I can't believe noone has come up with a device for a distributorless system. I hope someone can prove me wrong on this. What do u boosted maxes use?

There are but you'd have to go with a stand alone engine management. Haltek,Motec, speed pro, TECIII are all at your disposal.

These have to be programmed via PC, right?? They're also like $2000 vs $4-500 for something similar to an MSD. Am I right?

No one has gotten one of these to work on a Maxima yet. One has Helltech installed but last I heard it wasnt working yet.

That's strange. It's like there's now real way to retard timing unless you got a 95-96 ecu you can send to jim wolf.

This is incorrect.

The J&S retards timing in three ways.

1) Knock retard up to 20 degrees, capable of retarding all cylinders at once or individually as they knock. The factory ECU does not even do knock retard at wide open throttle in the upper RPM's.

2) Boost referenced up 20 degrees, settings are; boost retard start selectable 0-10psi infinitly adjustable and retard rate 0-2 degrees per pound of boost infinitly adjustable.

3) Nitrous activation up to 6 degrees, settings are 2deg, 4deg or 6deg

Whoops, I forgot to add the J&S as well. Yea, I know all this, but for certain reasons, I choose not to deal with them and am looking for an alternative way to retard timing for boost. The Haltec, Motec, TECIII etc. are too expensive: around 1500-2000 and require PC programming right?? I'm looking for any alternative that will cost me around the same amt. of money as the J&S or an MSD type device.

By the way, thanks for trying to help an org. member out, MardiGras

Again, anybody know of engine retard devices that can/may be used for the max, other than J&S and PC programmable $2000 kits???
