Got walked by a 35th Annv GT auto

I was coming home from lifting and had a great open stretch of road with a light approaching. A younger guy in a 35 Annv GT Stang (red with black hood/trunk) rolled up. I looked over, but he stared straight ahead. The light went green and we both accelerated like normal. I kept winding 1st and he bit. He punched it and then I did the same. We took off and we were neck and neck from ~15mph till about 70mph where he proceded to walk me By 80mph when I shut down, he had opened up the lead to about 1 car. I waved and entered the highway. He did get the slight jump, but the fact that he did start pulling me up top was kind of a let down. I'm really impressed with what Ford has done with their autos. They are lightyears better than they were 5 years ago. This race was very close to the races I've had with a Bullet and another auto GT I had at the track.....both of which I got walked by 1-2 cars.

I can't wait to get my VI so I can stop these later model Stangs from walking away from me

Good race... I have yet to race a 99+ stang, but i expect my results would be similar, probably a little worse since I believe your car has more top end than mine does.

Na, I think our cars are pretty comparable. I'm surprised you have raced one yet because they're everywhere. Have you seen them run at your track? The 99+ GT Stangs can be impressive if driven well. I've seen autos pull 14.4s with just mufflers, intake work, and drag radials. I've seen 5 speeds hit low low 14s stock. Of course I've come up against a few at the track and have been toe to toe with them the whole way, BUT usually I get walked around 70-80mph. One thing is for sure though, I doubt these GTs will be walking me after I get the VI

Dave,

Impressive that you kept up with him down low especially since you gave him the headstart. You gotta admit man, our Max's have great torque for a 3.0L Japanese V6. Probubly even more then your old z28. ..but seriously how would your 5spd Max stack up against your old z28 in the low, mid-range, and high RPM powerbands?

I can't wait till I get my 5-speed, it'll be as if I supercharged my auto, except I control the gears and get more punch off the line.

When you get your buick grand national, your not gonna get rid of the Maxima are you?

I thought you meant V1 but I reread and it said VAR IN, so I was about to reply youll be walking them , alright so I had to reread but thats before posting something totally off the wall.

My friend had a stock GT 2000 or 2001 it was and the gearing is designed for top speed above I say 60 and above. Besides they are V8's so dont feel so bad our cars are still quick for V6's , when he took it to the track his best time was 14.5 straight out of the dealership no slicks or anything.

I've seen plenty of them at the track, never been lined up with one though.

Quickest one I've seen was a 13.9 or 13.8... not sure if he was stock or modded, auto or 5spd. He sounded stock though. But who knows he might have just had stock mufflers still. I've seen others running 14.1-14.8.

Yes, I think the Maxima has very impressive lowend torque, especially for a V6. It still doesn't compare to the mountains of torque my 94 Z28 had. My Maxima is as fast in 1/4 as my Z28 was stock and that's what impresses me the most. My Z28 went low 14s@98 with 2.0 60s stock and my Maxima is doing 14.6s@97-98 with 2.3 60s. The only thing holding my Max back is traction. From a 60mph roll, I'd bet my Z28 would have had a hard time holding back my Maxima, especially after 100mph. Very few things feel better than shifting your own gears. I don't know if it's the sound, the slight rocking of the car, the control, or what. I wish my Z28 would have been a 6 speed even though they really aren't quicker in the 1/4.

I won't be selling my Maxima when I get the GN because I need a car I can count on. The GN will be a weekend cruiser and track bruiser. I'd be happy with consistent 12s in the GN. My wife love's GNs too. Two years ago when she went with me to the track for the first time, she witnessed a completely stock looking GN make a 10-second pass making very little noise in the process. She thought it was the most bada$$ thing around. When the loud 12-second Z28 behind the GN was scrambling to keep up, she said "ya see, just bacause you're loud doesn't mean you're fast".

Yeah those GM muscle cars autos are incredible! For some reason the auto is faster than the manual. A guy I work with has a Trans-Am formula he races(low 11's) and a Camaro SS(low 12's) as his daily driver( he buys cars like it was nothing). Those american V8s are so responsive to minor modifications.. it is incredible! If you put straight pipes and a intake on a rustang GT they are very responsive(trust me I have felt the difference I have driven both). Yeah if I had extra cash I would buy a Camaro SS AND a 2k3 max but that is only when I go to bed and dream about the lottery!

The reason the GM autos are so quick is because of their deep 1st gear. The 700R4/4L60E tranny used in GM lightbody trucks, F-Bodies, Corvette, Caprice/SS, etc has a deep 3.06:1 1st gear. Most automatics have 2.4-2.5:1 1st gears which makes them sluggish off the line. When you team that 3.06 1st gear up with a stout 3.23 rear gear, the car/truck leaps off the line hard. The 4L60E is also very efficent and lightweight. The 4L60E only looses 15% to the drivetrain. That's incredible for a RWD automatic. It can also take about 450ft/lbs of torque in stock form.

I couldn't justify 18K-25K for a used 89 F-Body Freaking bada$$ car though.

You didnt see the GT that I ran against at Rt. 66? I believe it ran a 13.1. I ran a Bullit 5 speed a while ago and it only pulled maybe a 1/4 car on from 10-80......Bad Driver??????
