Manual tranny fluid change - 16quarts???

I have a '99 5spd Maxima and want to change the tranny fluid to go synthetic - either Amsoil or Redline MT90. Here are a couple of question....

1. Is it necessary to do a complete flush or the tranny fluid? The Nissan dealer service rep said I would need 16 quarts for the complete flush
2. Won't just a regular drain and fill work? Will it get rid of most of the old tranny fluid and any metal shavings that might be present?
3. How many quarts would I need for a regular drain and fill? I guess 5 should be enough right?

Unlike an AT, with the MT, draining will get rid of almost all the old oil. You then fill it back up with 4.5qts. No real need for flushes...

I did Redline and it made a huge diff. Just drain the tranny oil and refill until it starts to drip out. It is about 4.5 quarts. The bolt is actuall the female end of a 1/2" ratchet so no need for a socket. You may need some good leverage to get it off ( I did) good luck.

id say go for the mt-90, everyone seems to agree its the best for ours and i love mine, the first day it shifted all rough for some reason, then after about a week, it was smooth as butter all the time, and mine took about 4.75 quarts.

There's no reason to flush a manual tranny. Just make sure it is warm before you drain it. You'll never need more than 5 quarts to do it on a 5 speed and I've changed many different ones over.

that's what i was wondering as to why the hell would a MT require a flush. we don't have to worry about torque converters which are present in AT. "you will need 16 quarts" statement from the nissan service guy almost threw me out of my chair so i had to verify it with all you guys
thanks

you also have to remember that even though a lot of guys here are manu-maniacs, most of the outside world is auto. The guy probably heard you say tranny service and just thought auto trans -->flush. makes you wonder though, since this guy was a nissan service tech.....

oh well, those "nissan service techs" also told me once that i should not go to synthetic with just 37k miles on my car. he said i should go synthetic only if i had high mileage. i believe it is exactly opposite of that?

Actually, neither is entirely true. I have seen cars with over 100K switch to synthetic with no problems. Ideally, the lower you switch, the more you can reap the benefits of the synthetic oil.
