Installed Maxspeeds, Blown Rear Struts! HELP!

Well.....Me, my Brother, and his friend installed the maxspeed springs today. I was impressed with the drop. Its very Noticible and Eliminates that Wheel Gap. Has that Sporty Ride to it, and its a bit firm. Handling is awsome.

So we install the front 2 Springs with a breeze, nothing wrong. Then it comes to the back ones. We take out the back strut to replace the spring and the struth bolt on the top of it doesnt seem to wanna come off. After pulling and tugging Forcley and sprayin some lube on it, it finally came off......followed by a lot of greese. We install the spring, then move on the the next rear strut. Same thing occurs. I take a Spin in the car after the springs are installed and every time I hit a bump this CLUNG noise comes from the back wheels. Thats where my brother and his friend said Them Struts are blown and now I need to replace them 2 with new ones. I was thinkin about gettin the KYBS. But All I need are the 2 back struts. Where is the best place I can get them from at the Lowest Price? Please anyones input would be appreciated. I dont think I can continue to drive my car with that noice everytime I hit a bump.

(NOTE: No Noise from the front and there seems to be no problems comming from the front struts, there fine. Just need to replace the back few. My Max is a 98 GLE with 62K Miles on it)

Thanx!

Tire Rack has the Back KYBs for 87$ A piece. Is this a good price, and is this a realibel site?

Thanx

Yeah its a reliable site, not sure about the price though. I got my shocks and springs from them, but I think I might have paid a little too much for mine.

yes, it is a good price. why? cuz no one really sell them individually. the only two sell them individually that I can think of is cattman and eatricezone. and they sell the rears more expensive(well, just a little) than tirerack. There is no BS whatsoever from tirerack. if the web say it's in stock, it's in stock. the shipping is the true shipping (no handling) and not to mention is fast (no back order or whatever process) tirerack is the biggest tire/wheel company in the US. How do i know all this? cuz I too bought the rears from them. Well, there is one possibility, though. check out the guy call Nick (search the For sell forum) he might sell you the rears only (but I don't think he'll do that again cuz I called him last month and he said he only had the front left and he had to put them on ebay).

I wouldn't just automatically assume the struts are blown because you get a CLUNG noise. Struts don't blow from just one little ride. I would take them back off or get someone to bounce the car while watching the struts to see what is going on.
If you want to spend money and replace them go ahead but I would check them out first. You can also remove one and take the spring off and check the action as well if you can't see anything with it on.

I agree with Jime here. I think something isn't installed correctly. Noises aren't usually an indication of a blown strut. Take the rears apart again, depress the piston shaft and see if you've got some resistance going on. The piston should give you some resistance in both directions and be nice and smooth.

Check to make sure the assembly of the top hardware is in the correct order. I think you have misplaced a bushings. Refer to the sticky thread titled Noise from Suspension for an exploded view of the strut/shock assembly. Print it out and take it with you while you check everything out again.

Your car is 4 years old with 62K on it. Now your putting a slightly more agressive spring on the old struts. There not going to like that after a while and will start to soften up some. Save your $$$$ and put the KYB GR2's on there if you don't need an adjustable strut/shock. They perform quite well with aftermarket performance springs.

Sounds like you forgot to put the washer inbetween the rubber bushing and the top nut... You will get a clunking noise if this washer is missing...

ok, I think I know where the noise is coming from. I had the same symptoms. Jack up your rears a bit, and look at your bumpstop. Is there a big washer underneath the bumpstop? That big washer belongs UNDER the bumpstop. Before you try anything else, check for this and post back.

def check that first becuz that is exactly what will happen if the piece is missing. but the possibility is there about blown struts becuz my rear shocks blew after a week of having progress springs on, they had the liquid pouring out and everything, so first chek the washer then see if the shocks are blown, but i bought kybs from that place in connecticut just the rears for 150 shipped, got them in 2 days, but from what i heard they are outta stock so i lucked out, cuz i bought the fronts for 200 shipped right before they sold out.

What color is the liquid? Does it look like new motor oil? In case my struts start to leak I'll know what to look for.

clear. no color. just clear. if you use your hand to touch it, it just feel like motor oil. but usually, it's all dirty down there.

did u torque down the strut nut after you took the car off jackstands or whatever, its definately an install prob, not blown struts. Just make sure you tighten everything down once the car is back on the ground. Im pretty sure its just something that is loose.
