Here are the specs:
Maxima 97 GXE (190HP)
Camry 97 XLE (192HP)
Off the line which is faster? I want to know because my friend has a "club camry" as he calls it and I think I can take him in my Maxima...anyone ever raced these two? I'm guessing his is a touch heavier because he has leather and crome rims...cloth and hubbies in the max? ANy ideas?

They are about equally as fast. In a stoplight race it can go either way since both cars are so well matched.
5-spd max will dust the camry, but not an automatic.
In fact, comparing my 97 GXE auto with my mom's 99 XLE V6, the Camry is much smoother than the Maxima. The Maxima's engine has a bit more growl, and feels more sporty but in reality both cars are about the same. The Camry's automatic is much smoother so it feels a little more powerful since the shifts are much more crisp.

re: max vs camry
both cars are pretty evenly matched, much like the Acura CL 3.0. Max should win against either of the two if you gots the five speed. I've gone up against my buddy's CL auto over and over, and I keep winning, but not by too much. I think the Camry would be pretty similar, they're a little heavier than the Max.
Handling:
Stock Max GLE/GXE vs. stock Cam: ~same
Stock Max SE vs. stock Cam: edge Max
Max w/ Eibach/Koni vs. stock Cam: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
BTW, I have a 99 SE-L 5 sp. w/ Eibach/Koni and I *LOVE* the handling, *HATE* the rattles!

comparing a newer less abused camry to an older maxima?
my shifts are still crisp and nice, except when i floor it, my car bolts forward how about comparing a 2000 camry auto to a 2000 maxima auto..both would be equal right?...when i drive my moms corolla the shifts are hella smooth..then again..it only has like 10ks..and my maxima has 115,000plus miles..see what im saying?..

You right the camry has a much comfortable ride as far as smoothness go............BTW didnt' it test high for the least amount of interior vibration.........only if Nissan could master that, I hate the stock ride of Maximas IMPO
