Alternator install
Alternator install
For those of you who like to do your own repairs and may need a little help. I hope that this speeds up your process a little.
Tools needed: 1.11mm,12mm,14mm sockets and maybe a 13mm but I don't recall where or if I used it.
2.1/4" ratched and 1/2" ratchet It would help to have the sockets for both, and a 3" and 7" extentsion.
3. Boxed end wrench I didn't have a metric set so I used a 9/16 but I think that it was a 14mm bolt.
4. Jack and jack stands
5. an extra set of hands will help alot, so get a friend to help
6. flat and philips head screw driver
Here goes. Jack up the car so you have room to move pretty freely under it. you'll begin by removing the bolts holding up the debris sheild (I don't know what it is really called so please correct me) that is under the car, they are 11mm, also take out some of the bolts on the one that is next to the wheel so you can move it back a little.
Now unhook the negative battery terminal so you don't arc anything, In order to get the alternator out you have to unbolt the ac compressor from its spot so you can move it around. before you go to unbolt it you need to remove the plug that is hooked to it. The plug is best reached from the top of the car, you can see it when you look down at the compressor from the top of the car, you may need a flash light to see where it unhooks, once you see it reach down grab it push in the clip and pull on the plug all at the same time and it should slid right out. While you're standing there you may want to go ahead and unhook the plug on the alternator also and unbolt the power cable from it, the bolt holding the power cable is 12mm.
On the passenger side of the engine there is a brass colored bolt this is the adjuster for the tensioner pulley you will be able to see the pulley under the adjuster, you need to get your wrench and loosen the bolt on the pulley but don't remove it, now with your 14mm socket and 1/4" ratchet loosen the adjuster untill the rod that attaches the adjuster to the pulley is all the way up in the bolt( you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it). With this done you can remove the belt.
Now get under the car and with the 1/2" ratchet 3" extension and 14mm socket remove the 4 bolts holding the ac compressor in place, the bolts are facing the front of the car and may be a little difficult to get to, there is a hose going to the commpressor and the coolant hose in your way. Once you get these removed you can slide the compressor from its place and let it hang by its hoses.
Slide a little farther under the car and look at the back of the alternator, there will be a bolt (14mm)that will be close to the top and nearer to the cab of the car on the alternator remove this bolt, it is very long so don't get discouraged. Now get out from under the car, go to where you removed the cable and plug from under the alternator and to the left there should be a bracet with a bolt that is connected to the alternator, if you have help have them remove this bolt while you lay under the car holding the alternator up incase it desides to fall (this shouldn't happen) slide the alternator torwards the front of the car untill it comes loose and then manuver it around the compressor to get it out.
Now get the new one and put it in the place of the old alternator go ahead and put the long bolt in first but just get it started so you can still move the alternator around this will help you get the top bolt back in, now just reverse the process bolt the compressor back up put the belt on and tighten everything back up.
Remember to plug in all the plugs you removed and hook the battery back up. If you've reversed everything and the belt is on nice and tight, go ahead and start the car to make sure it runs before you take it off the jack stands. Now lower the car and your done.
If anyone has anything they would like to add feel free to do so. And if you have any questions you can E-mail me At Guitarplr_180@msn.com
Disclamer: I take no responsiblility for your mistakes if you think you can't do it take it to a mechanic, also use common sense so if you removed it put it back.
