Hello all,
I heard that the '95 and '96 O2 sensors commonly fail. So I came on here to see if anyone's got any advice in my situation.
My car '95 Nissan Maxima with 56000 miles on it had been the greatest car... never had any problems, able to burn any family sedan off the line. Anyways, a week ago, the "check engine" light came on, and I was starting to get worried. Later that week, it failed to start... just once though, now it starts fine... it only failed once. I took it into a Nissan dealership, and had it checked out. The guy said that it was the O2 sensor, but he said that the entire harnest of wires needs to be replaced in order to fix the problem. Which is going to cost 2000 dollars. And this is a common problem in nissan maximas '95-96 I was in disbelieve. So I took it to another japanese car dealership, and they said that I just had to replace my sensor. Anyhow, one guy on here said that the sensor is a common problem and that all maximas' should fail. Please give me any advice or experience you've had with this.

My )2 sensor failed too. All I had to do was take it down to the dealership and they replaced just the O2 sensor and after that the engine light went off and no problems. That other shop thats trying to make you replace the whole wire harness is trying to rip you off...big time! olice:

1) A bad oxygen sensor is easily replaced and it does not require replacement of any electrical harness.
2) A bad oxygen sensor will not influence starting. The signal from the oxygen sensor is ignored by the Engine Control Module (the computer) until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.

At best, there has been a miscommunication between you and the dealer. At worst, the dealer has lied to you and attempted to cheat you.

2000 bucks for oxygen sensor????

humm....tell him he can kiss something...
you can even go to microsoft carpoint
http://carpoint.msn.com/homepage/default.asp
look under used nissan car....click on your car model
click on reliability
you should see this:

A common problem on this vehicle is failure of the Rear Oxygen Sensor, and an occasional problem is
failure of the Evap Canister Vent Control Solenoid Valve. The cost to repair the Rear Oxygen Sensor is
estimated at $71.58 for parts and $45.50 for
labor. The cost to repair the Evap Canister Vent
Control Solenoid Valve is estimated at $59.94
for parts and $26.00 for labor. Note: These
repairs are covered under warranty up to 3
years/36,000 miles.All prices are estimates
based on $65 per flat rate hour and do not
include diagnostic time any applicable sales tax.

That is no where near 2000 bucks..........nless you are having some other mechanical break down...I mean some serious mechanical breakdown.....should get that dealer's *** to the court for telling a lie...no wonder people think nissan sucks...come upon these kind of dealer and of course you will think it sucks....
