I understand that you are new...

but using all CAPS will not remove the speed governor.
Get a JWT ECU. I'm pretty sure that'll remove the governor.

Is there another alternative?

I can't imagine why someone would do it, but couldn't you swap with a SE ECU and get it removed? I guess if you salvaged one and gave back yours + $$ it may go over.

The fields fuel controller wont help that at all. The governor is programmed into the ECU. A replacement ECU is the only solution.

Congratulations - you were shafted

- Here's the deal. All automatic equipped Maxima GLE and GXE's (?) had this speed governor programmed into their Engine Control Module (ECU). The 5-speeds and the SE's did not. So, the only way to get rid of this governor is to swap your ECU. That means either an SE chip, or a performance chip (the one you want if you want to go fast). Jim Wolf Technologies (JWT) sells a performance ECU that you would be interested in.
- BUT, chances are, if you bought an automatic, you will not be racing. You will not have the opportunity to reach that speed in a (somewhat) safe track environment. ie, you shouldn't be going that fast on public roads. So, forget the chip and do something else with your money. Read the "Maxfaqs" link at the homepage. You will get your answers. Also, their are links to aftermarket web-sites just below that in the "Links" section. Explore the homepage to avoid embarassment. ;-)

Actually ALL GXE's including 5 speeds have it

I have one. I don't like having it, but since the cost to get rid of it will cost around $500 or so, I will live with it. My wife tells me I don't need to go over 115 anyway.

Re: Actually ALL GXE's including 5 speeds have it

I'm going to have to change mine out before my scheduled SCCA Street School in February. Would be embarassing to be limited to 112 on the 3.2 mile Thunderhill FIA road course. So, instead of it being a $175.00 day at the track plus tire and brake wear it's going to cost an additional $500.00... not too bad compared to the higher priced competition schools (Skip Barber, Bondurant, etc.)

http://www.thunderhill.com/

Also, I've heard that the upgraded ECUs with higher rev limiter and more flexible power band will assist in autocross performance as well... I'll have to test the theroy next season.

I asked Don in Texas about doing this. He said it wouldnt change the limiter. You can do a search about it. Since you ahve a 96, go with the group deal goin on the URDP ECU that is going for 475. It will remove it adn giv eyou big gains. My 99 Cali spec max is limited at 117 now. Doh!

Actually, the only Maxima with the governor is the GXE 5-spd or a GXE without S&C package. All other Maximas don't have the governor, including most GXE automatics.

The UPRD ECU is cheaper and will show the same gains as the JWT ECU, if not even better. So go with the group deal.

5 dollar way or 500 dollar way

5 dollar way - find the speedo wire located behind the centercouncil, cut it, and put a switch on it. so whenever you need to go over 115mph, you can just turn the switch on.

500 dollar way - buy an upgraded ECU.

Make sure you have the right speed-rated tires first. You don't wanna be going 130 and blow out a tire. The limiter was put in place because that's all the tires could handle.
