Mis-shift from 3rd to 2nd Anyone??
Tonight I was driving my friends 95 Max SE 5-speed and he was driving my TL-S, and we were messing around on the highway doing little races and such (he killed me in my own car evertime BTW). Anyway, one time from a 70 MPH gun, the unthinkable happened. I was reaching the end of 3rd doing around 95 MPH or so, and when I went to shift into 4th, it went into 2nd!! RPM's shot up to like 8000 RPMs, and I was so upset that I did that to my friends car!!! Any of you guys do that before by accident and have any problems with you cars later? Thanks for any imput.

I did that 2 or 3 times when I first got my car. Luckily I never had any problems... I'm sure you can imagine the potential problems that could occur though. If the car is OK now I'm sure you didn't do any damage.

Yeah, JMAXIMA did it on our way back from the race track one time after we finished having a little fun on the highway he tried to shift down and accidently shifted to 2nd( his jumped to 8k rpm as well). Needless to say he was kind of freaking out, but it has been a couple of months and it seems fine, probably took some life off the engine though.

With the somewhat driver-side angled shifter, I guess it wouldn't be too hard to do this if you were used to a shifter that was more straight-angled. When I first got my max, there were a few times where I hit the gate going from 3-4, but never over down into 2nd. Seems the best way to avoid this is to go with a palms-facing-passenger overhand slap downwards from 3-4.

Yeah that's funny, I heard the Brittney Spears story too. Anyways, that's very bad news. My brother did that in his 94 BMW 3.28 The gear ratios are really close in that car, $900 lesson for my brother. It was a little bit of the shifter bushing's fault. My brother was just too lazy to change it at the time. A $20 part would have saved him...but we all learn from mistakes.
Our cars have rev limits, however they are only good for fuel cut-offs. Over revving from a mis-shift is going to really mess you up. I think you must have been going like 80 something. I think the Nissan states in the manual to not exceed 80 MPH on 3rd gear.

one of my friends was racing a z28 in the max and he went from 3rd to 2nd while speed shifting. he saw the needle go past 8k and clutched in again, but it was too late. next day the engine wouldn't turn over. eventually we figured out we spun a rod bearing and ended up replacing the engine.

and thier's the story of how board member 'brokenmotor' got his name...
I was racing my friend in my old Integra and hit 2nd from the top of 3rd... I saw the RPM's shoot up and heard a loud BANG, pulled over, shut the car off, looked everything over, and drove it for another 3 years, 40k miles before I traded it in for my last Max... ![Wink](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

I've done exactly the same thing, but after i did it the speedometer stopped working, but the tachometer was still functioning, and it wasn't logging anymore miles :], I should have kept it like that.
