It is advisable to buy a rebuilt starter with a warranty. A starter obtained from an auto recycler is already worn, and might not be much better than the one you've already got.

Remanufactured units are available for $140 (Brand X) up to $360 (Bosch).
If done by a shop the labor charge ought to be one hour.
This is a job which can be done by the home mechanic.
No need to jack the car, the starter motor is accessed from above.

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.

2. Remove the air intake duct and the air cleaner housing assembly.

3. Disconnect the battery cable and the solenoid terminal connection from the starter solenoid.

4. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts and remove the starter from the engine. These bolts may be really tight!

I've been pleased with my experience with on-line purchase from PartsAmerica.com. Go to http://www.partsamerica.com/

I've placed two orders with them and got 100% "fill" (no backorders) and really fast turnaround. In my case, I elected to pick up my orders at the nearest Advance Auto store. With this deal, there was no charge for shipping and no sales tax. (I wonder how they get away with that?!?)

I believe that a properly remanufactured unit is every bit as good as new. You might want to do a price comparison with a new starter from your nearest Nissan dealer. You could also contact one of the dealers which sells Nissan factory parts at discount.

Steve Cutchen has an excellent MaxFAQs page:
http://web2.airmail.net/scutchen/max_faq/

It cites two Nissan dealers who sell factory parts at a discount.

Brown and Brown Nissan, Tempe AZ.
Parts department: 800.237.0003
http://www.brownandbrowntempe.com/parts_form.cgi

Courtesy Nissan, Richardson, TX.
Parts department: 800.527.1909
http://www.courtesyparts.com/

When you contact them be sure to mention you got their name from the Nissan newsgroup.

I don't know if the solenoid on your installed starter is good or bad. If you don't know either, play it safe and get one with the solenoid. [I thought all rebuilt starters came with a solenoid.]

My starter died on me last week. It's not too hard to pull, follow the instructions above. Once the starter is out, it's simple to disassemble. I found that my brushes were very short. I cleaned all the muck out and went to an alternator and starter shop specializing in foreign parts. The shop guy yanked the old brushes, put in new ones, and I was out the door in 15 minutes and only $15 lighter. It's worked perfectly since.

You might need a new solenoid as well. In that case you'll need to compare having a shop rework your old one vs. buying a remanufactured unit.
