Timing Belts

Does my 4th gen need a timing belt replacement?

No.

All VQ equiped Maximas (1995 - on) use a dual stage timing chain. This needs no periodic maintenace or replacement. It is designed to last the life of the engine. This is a very good thing

Hi all, I found the post above in the 4th generation FAQ and I am now totally confused. I have a 1996 Maxima GXE I think with 80,000 miles. I took the car to the Nissan dealer for a seatbelt replacement and I was suggested to replace the 3 timing belts. I was told that it should have been done when the car reached 60,000 miles. I bought the car about a month ago so there is no way for me to know if these timing belts were replaced or if indeed I need to do this job. This is my 3rd Maxima, I had a 1985 and a 1989 before I bought this one. I will appreciate any opinions about these timing belts. Should I replace them or not? Thank for your time.

Your car does not have timing belts. If the dealer told you that, they are stupid or (more likely) scamming you.

You do have two belts (AC/Alternator belt and Power Steering belt) that are a good idea to replace around this time. However, I would do it myself because the dealer will try to charge you way too much.

Either the dealer is trying to scam you into paying for a 10 hour job, or the guy is an idiot.

The timing chain should go the life of the motor.

You should find another dealer. If they told you that with a straight face they should be shot. You can replace the 2 accessory belts yourself for less than $30 and an hour of your time. Also, if you really do have a 96 with only 80K on it that needs a new timing CHAIN, make the place you bought it from take it back. That's pretty unheard of for a VQ to wear the chain that fast.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I found this so interesting that this Wednesday I am going to the dealer and give them a little peace of my mind. I am glad I became a member of this web site. Thanks a lot.

my "service advisor" today (while i was getting my recalled alternator replaced) told me im due for my 60k (im at 63)
he said i should get that engine flush, which i might,
and he told me to get something worked on my idle and timing?
he did come out with it and say that the newer 4th's have a chain and not belt.
can someone point out the importance of tuning the idle and stuff at 60k?
