The GTP thread... HUD in a Maxima?

The mention of the HUD in the GTP; reminded me that for awhile, a HUD was available in the 3rd gen? Early 4th gen? Anyone ever have a Max with the HUD option, and was it worthwhile? What did it display? My friends Vette - HUD was very distracting.. makes me wonder if Nissan would have done it better..

To tell you the truth I think the Corvette HUD is nice. I believe even Altimas had an option of getting a HUD, but I've never seen one myself. DEFI makes a unit that would act as a HUD, but a factory one would probably work better if it existed. This would be an interesting project

I thought the Corvette one kicked *** when I drove my neighbors... I didn't even know it was there it first. Then as I drove thier were numbers and an RPM bar I believe. Cool stuff.

I believe the 240SX had this option. Might be worth while assuming its not a wiring nightmare... and cutting holes in the dash might not be pretty.

heads up display

basically it projects the speedo and tach onto the lower part of the windshield so that you never have to take your eye off the windshield to look at the guages.

Heads Up Display = HUD

it shows the speed up on the windshield. it seems very distracting to me.

Assuming that the wiring could be done (which I don't see why it couldn't) the HUD can be customized. The Corvettes are very nice because you can show rpm, mph, oil pressure, and gas in different variations. For road trips gas and mph would be useful, while an autocrosser would prefer just rpms and oil pressure (possible mph). The HUD displays decently during the day on the Corvettes and GTPs, but at night is where it's really useful.

I believe the DEFI unit is a box that sits on the dash that projects onto the windshield, but the 240 HUD sounds like it would be better. I think the only real problem is that our dash arches up so much and there isn't very much room between the top of the dash and the gauge cluster. The wiring would almost certaintly work from another Nissan.

This is what it looks like in a Corvette. I never once found it distracting though... it lets you focus on the road but keep an eye on other things...

You don't find that distracting/annoying at all? It's RIGHT in the middle of the windscreen. I figured the HUD's would be placed more to the bottom right or left of the field of view, i.e. low on the windscreen either to the corner for the left, or the centre for the right. I could understand that, but right in the middle I personally would hate.

It's not nearly as high contrast as that picture shows and I'm 6'3" so only block a little in front of the road. That picture is taken at steering wheel height so it looks different. If your 5 feet tall it might be a problem, but even then it's really not high contrast enough to be a problem.

Personally I dont like it one bit. Its not that hard to glance down at the speedo anyway. Id have to pass on it if it was in my car. Id turn it off.

If it's anything like the gtp's you can adjust it up and down. for placement preferance.

I posted a thread about this about a month ago, but nothing really came out of it.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=135030

I'd be very interested in this mod if we could figure out how to wire up a 3rd gen Maxima or Altima HUD, or maybe hook up an aftermarket unit.

The only place I found that sells these is DEFI, referenced above and in that other thread.
