Did I F*ck Up My Max

I WAS RACING AT AN EVENT TODAY IN FORT MACLOED. I WAS UP AGAINST A TSI TALON. WE STARTED THE RACE HE GOT A GOOD JUMP ON ME (BEACAUSE OF AWD) BUT AS WE MOVED DOWN THE TRACK I GAINED ON HIM THE WHOLE WAY. WHEN I WENT TO SHIFT FROM 3rd TO 4th I ACCIDENTLY HIT 2nd (F*CK) MY CAR REVED TO WHAT I SAW WAS 8 GRAND. HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THIS BEFOR AND DO YOU THINK THERE WAS ANY DAMAGE DONE. THERE ARE NO SUPICIOUS NOISES. THIS RACE WILL BE IN MY NIGHTMARES FOR A LONG TIME TO COME.

VERY WORRIED ABOUT MY POOR MAX

BEST TIME TODAY 14.7 AT 3500 FEET ABOVE SEE LEVEL AND RACING IN 95 DEGREE F. WEATHER

you will be advised by others not to type in all caps.

did you type in all caps because you are so insanely upset that your car went to "8 grand" but you're driving around with no suspicous noises?

Well, the rev limiter should have stopped it from hitting 8000rpms. Since you're not hearing any weird noises and you were able to make it home, the car didn't go into limp mode. the Max should be ok, just be careful next time.

Yup I agree with Jude, you should be okay. However if you do it again your transmission is already weak and will most likely give way. And I doubt you revved to 8k.

The rev limiter cuts fuel at 6500-6600rpms, it doesnt mean u cant overrev, if u shift from a high rpm in a upper gear back into a lower gear, the transmission would cause the engine to spin faster than its made to, so it CAN rev past the rev limiter, and most problems that occur after overrevving is head damage bc the valvetrain components werent strong enough, but if there isnt any problems visual or audible, the car should be fine.

Thank you for helping me out, I was at redline in third when I droped it into second and I hit 8g. I didn't think it was possible ether. Do you think this will have weakend some components?

P.S. my poor max

Yes. But like I said if your car is running fine now, don't do it again and you shouldn't have any problems.

You definitely zinged your motor somethin' fierce. That's the one sure way to blow up any motor. But hopefully your clutch/tires slipped a bit and you got back on the clutch before anything bad happened.

Listen carefully on a cold startup for noises coming from the head area. That's where most damage would have occured would be my guess. The basic lower block pistons/crank are wicked strong so I doubt there'd be any problem there.

I'd drain and refill that tranny too with Redline and check for chunks.

Buy her some high-octane gas. Put a couple of coats of wax on 'er. Talk softly and rub her down with some armor-all.

is there a rev limiter on 5spd 4th gens?
say you floor it in first, will the rev's stop at redline and bounce back and forth? or just keep going?

Of course there is a rev limiter, but that will work only if you are steadily accelerating. When you downshift in the wrong gear, your engine will overrev even if the fuel is cut off.

iirc, you can spin a bearing by overrevving too. chances are that if you had it tached out in 3rd, and downshifted, it would have gone to more than 8k, but the tach would have stopped registering (kinda like burying the speedo, but still being able to go faster). you tend to run into valve float at very high rpms. hopefully the valvesprings are stiff enough that they didnt allow that, tho, as it would have VERY likely bent a valve, causing the problems these guys are talkin about.

this has happened to a few people including myself but i wasn't going fast enough for it to hit 8k rpm...mine was more like 5 or 6 maximum....scary thought but no one has recorded problems after doing this so you SHOULD be ok
