Engine with no compression in #5 ?

My buddy had a 96 brought to his shop the other day and it has 0 compression in #5 cylinder. This is a stock Maxima with about 103,000 miles on it. It has no performance mods. What would cause this? If the guy decides to get another engine put in the car, they said I could have the blown one. Would it be rings, valves, etc? The shop owner seems to think there's a hole in the piston. I hope that dude gets another engine! I'd love to have a VQ to tear apart and learn on.

My first guess would be a whole in the piston....

It could be a valve is bad or the rings aren't sealing. Either way to fix that engine the heads must be pulled. Tell him to just buy another VQ30DE from a salveyard and get a MEVI .
