I have a 97 maxima with the Auto temp control. I noticed that at night i can't see the controls on it well (the buttons, not the display)....only the off button and the down arrow really illuminate.
Anyway so i went to the nissan place and they said it's just one bulb that illuminates the entire unit...so i ordered that bulb, but before i get it and take everthing off, is this correct? Is it only one bulb that lights up the entire auto temp control unit buttons?

I have a 95 GLE with automatic climate control. I just replaced the lights in them. Mine have four very little bulbs. The dealer looked up the wrong bulb number and size when I first ordered my bulbs. I'm not sure if the 95 auto climate control is the same as the 97. I can tell you for sure that My 95 has four bulbs.

kest, what part number

I was told by the nissan dealer that in my 95se w/ auto climate control that the UP/DOWN temp button lights were a lost cause when it comes to replacing them, that it couldn't be done basically. You have a '95 with auto climate, correct? Can u tell me how u did it, w/ part #'s ? Thanks

Actually there are only 3 bulbs to replace in the manual A/C controls. . . There are instructions that Mo Max wrote up about a month ago. . . They were easy to follow, and the bulbs are really strange. I think he even listed the part number in the thread. . . Look around Thanksgiving for a thread by Supa Lao about changing bulbs. . . It is in there

This just goes to show that the dealer doesn't always know what the hell they are talking about. The following part numbers are for dash bulbs. I mentioned earlier that they gave me the wrong part the first time but one of these is defiantly the right number.

26260-01p40 - socket bulb
28529 - bulb

The up down button is not a lost cause because all my lights went out and I replaced all of them. There are four. They all work fine now. Remember, this is for my 1995 GLE automatic climate control unit. I have no idea if any of the other 4th gen max automatic climate control units are the same.

As for how you replace the bulbs.
I just took apart the dash, removed the auto climate control unit from the rest of the dash and pried all the plastic clips up a little. This allowed me to remove the front cover and expose the buttons. Then you need to do the same to remove the plastic cover that houses the circuit board. Honestly, if you get to the point where you have the unit apart from the dash, just look at if carefully and you will figure out how it comes apart. Remember to be careful not to break the plastic clips because you will need them when you snap the unit back together again. The auto climate control unit is easy to work on because there aren’t any screws except on the circuit board itself. When I have a day off from work, I’ll take pics of it all taken apart if someone still needs instructions.

I live in Virginia and I went to the parts counter and the guy there told me that the lights could not be replaced??? I then spoke with the service manager and explained to him my situation and he said that the parts guy was an idiot and there there are 4 bulbs(like everyone here has said) and that it is a tedious process but it would be worth my while to do it myself since they charge too fricken much at the dealer(he quoted me like 6 hours of labor to change the bulbs). I really appreciate that some people at the dealer know what they are talking about and the some of the guys behind the part counters are morons, talk about seperation of service teams at a dealer.

Just my opinion...

By the way my car is a 95 SE with the automatic climate controls.

Just in case anyone needs to know what the bulbs actually look like, here they are. Remember ther are four of them. The parts counter lost the one I brought in for them to look at.

I'd like to change the auto climate control lights to PIAA PLASMA BLUE so they can match my shifter and gauge lights. In the bulb picture above, those bulbs look like 194 bulbs (sidemarker blubs), are they?

Anyone want to figure out a way to use LEDs instead of these bulbs? They keep on unseating and it is annoying. . . I know how to rig a circuit to use LED, but getting a 12V source, ground wire, a 1K resister and an LED in there would be a pain in the *** as there is hardly any room as it is.

Nope, it isn't that easy. . . The picture makes them look big, they are like eraser size. . . And the way they are connected is slightly different, they have connectors on the bottom that make contact when the bulb is screwed in, if you move them just a little the don't contact anymore. I have never seen bulbs like this before.

I just called courtesy nissan and ordered the bulbs. The guy knew EXACTLY what i was talking about....unlike the parts guy from the dealership....they charged me $2.60 a bulb....i would suggest just calling them and ordering the bulbs if you need them

...I love this site....
Hey MacGyver, I was just browsing and saw your post.I have a 95GLE with exactly the same problem.First the Temp UP/DN lights went out, then the other side went out..Then the other day the ones on the right of the display came back on. I'm wondering how did things go for you? I saw kest's post about "taking apart the dash".Did you do yours? What do you take apart first?I don't mind opening a can of worms, but.......is there no way to just take off the face plate of the A/c section?....Any more info would be greatly appreciated.....Tampa95GLE at...maturovincent@hotmail.com

I'm plan on getting the bulbs sometime this week because they didn't have them in stock. I have taken apart the center console a few time though.

1. The vent up top. It unclips on the bottom.
Between the climate control and the vent there is a crack...that is where the hooks are...use a flat head screw driver or something and push is outward off the hooks.
Then (when off the hooks) push it down a little and pull it out

2. The shift boot. (i have a 5spd, but it's probabily the same)
Pull it strait up, starting from the bottom part.

3. The pop out thing, one screw, silver, and the just pull it out.

4. There are 4 gold screws, two on top, two on bottom
unscrew them and the entire console comes out (the radio, climate, and tray are all atached)

after that you can see what to do, take out some screws and dissconnect some wires that are in the way. The climate control face unclips to get to the bulbs.
