For all the 5spds out there....

Do you guys get some type of whining sound in first gear??
and does the power kind of surge? don't really know how to explain this...

No I don't. How many miles are on your clutch bushing/bearing. Does it squeal with the clutch disengaged and the car in neutral or only when the clutch pedal is depressed? As for the surging, can you be more specific?

i got 54000km or 34000 miles on the car, original clutch as well. it doesn't squeel or anything...it doesn't have anything to do with the clutch...this is when the clutch is completely disengaged.
in neutral there is no sound, even in other gears. i don't know if its because i have VLSD or what, but first gear whines...like if im just coasting really slow in first...not when accelerating with normal driving...

as for the power surge, its not very smooth, you can feel the power kind of bouncing when i press or stop pressing the gas.

Still don't know what to say about the surging but the whine is probably normal. Mine will whine but it just sounds like the gearing. It doesn't sound like anything is wrong. If it's got you worried check the fluid in the tranny. I would compare my whine to that of reverse gear. Is that what you're talking about?

yes thats what im talking about...though to a much smaller and less noticable extent.
about the surging of power, if im going at about 10mph in first and let go of the gas quickly, the car jerks, its not smooth, same thing as if i press the gas unless i do it very slow and smooth myself.
like if i tap the gas, the car jerks back and forth, not smooth at all. this is only in first gear, other gears are fine

all of that is due to the gearing and the amount of slippage that your clutch will allow. It sounds like your clutch still has good grab and that's why it jerks at low speeds when you are not accelerating. If your clutch was wearing out it wouldn't jerk as bad. This is all normal. If the jerkiness bothers you, just shift to 2nd. My car does the exact same thing. Good luck.

Sounds like to me it's perfectly normal. I can get my car to do the same things in 1st. That is how most of my manual trans cars have been. Like I said I can make it do those things you described but only if I try to.

Yeah, my car whines when its in first gear. I never thought anything about it, always seemed normal to me. It just sounds like fast-moving gears. Mine is also jumpy in first. The throttle is really sensitive there or something so you have to be careful what you do with your right foot. Try and finesse it and you won't get any jerky action.

yea, maxima's have strong first gears. You tap that gas and you'll be flying no matter what speed you are going. Just sucks it doesn't last too long...the latest i probably can shift out is like 25 mph and that's like redlining it or close to that

ok cool, sounds like everything is fine then

yeah i don't "try" to do this, but just experimenting with the car when i got no passengers.
as for my clutch, i think it grabs pretty hard even now, because it makes a hard chirp going into second.

Thanks for the replies,

Dev
