Overdrive is 4th gear. Keep it on- it'll save you gas.

Either stay away from Maxima.org forever, or trade that in right away for a 5spd manual. Tons of auto guys here want a 5spd soo bad, some of us even converted, like me. The only thing power mods will do is make you want a 5spd even more, becuase short of a supercharger, it's going to give the biggest permenant power.

Overdrive is a feature most automatic cars have. With overdrive on, you basically are only driving in 3 gears (4th is locked out). When you turn it off, it enables the 4th. When you are on the highway and turn O/D off, it shifts into 4th and the revvs shoot up, giving you instant throttle response. It's pretty neat. The only time o/d is going to make a difference is on the highway. Keep o/d ON to conserve gas milage, only turn it off when you wanna play around with the throttle.

In case you didn't know, here are the stats for the 4th Gen Maxima's:

0-60
95-96: 6.5-6.6 w/5spd | 7.4-7.6 w/auto
97-99: 6.6-6.7 w/5spd | 7.5-7.7 w/auto

1/4th Mile
95-96:*14.8-15.3 w/5spd | 15.6-16.2 w/auto
97-99: 15.0-15.3 w/5spd | 15.6-16.3 w/auto

Cali-Spec 99's are slower, but I highly doubt you have one unless you bought it in Cali.

Why stay away from Maxima.org?

I wanted a Auto.Yeah a 5spd would have been faster but if I wanted something really fast I would have gotten a older Foxbody mustang or a DSM.Two cars that are easliy capable of hitting 11's.

This car is for daily driving (Traffic).Im happy with Auto. so far.Its quick.

I plan to upgrade the tranny so it shouldnt be to much slower than the 5spd.

Give me some links to some mods and pricing etc...Supercharger, Turbo, Headers, Intake etc...

Thanks

Complete Tranny Rebuild from Level10: $4k.
PFI Turbo kit installed: $5k
Full Suspension: $1k

Money spent: $10k But a car that will stick to the road like a bimmer and is as fast as a Vette. Plus it seats 5 comfortably.

Oh my goodness this is so backwards!

No offense intended, but here is how overdrive really works.

A 4-spd automatic overdrive transmission has four forward gears. Overdrive is the 4th, or highest gear, where the engine turns with the fewest revolutions for a given speed. If you have overdrive ON, the car has access to 4th gear, thereby saving gas. If you turn overdrive OFF, you lock out 4th gear (i.e. you can only shift through the first three forward gears).

Basically, you turn off OD (by pushing the gear switch, and "OD off" lights up on the dashboard) when you are climbing a hill (for extra power) or if you are decending a steep grade and would like additional engine braking. If you read the owners manual, it will say exactly that. For most drivers, it is advisable to leave OD on all the time.

If you lock out OD (i.e. turn it off), you will be accelerating up to 3rd gear, which will feel more powerful (because it is) but you will be hurting fuel economy.

Again, Craig Mack, no offense intended. I just wanted to clarify things for our newbie owner here!

My ahole comment made you buy it. Reverse psycology. I'll send you the bill later.

J/K, nice car

And may a make a suggestion, TURBO Seems like you have mod money burning a hole in your pocket. It'll cost you a little more for the auto kit, but, well look at the numbers. That ~400 HP at the crank.

Turbocharged 1997 5 speed SE
277.5 fwHP, 280.6 fwft-lbs @ 5.5 psi
352.1 fwHP, 349.0 fwft-lbs @ 9.3 psi
372.1 fwHP, 369.2 fwft-lbs @ 11.5 psi
Stock Engine and transmission.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=103611

Oh yeah, my sig is around a $40 power mod, if you like working with tools. Otherwise, Front Strut Tower Brace and Rear Sway Bar are two good invertments.

There really isn't much available to us to build our engines internally. That said, very few people have blown engines, only one comes to mind.

And I think a tranny cooler is all you need for you auto. The other stuff is nice, but worry about that when you have the speed to back it up. Very few auto tranny failures come to mind, and with proper maitenence you should be good. Jime comes to mind when you wanna talk about a tranny with *****. He's running ~12.1 1/4 with nothing but a $45 tranny cooler and no internal engine mods for that matter.

IMO Turbo it. It has a lot of potential over the SC.

I think our engines are pretty darn strong as is. Get opinions from others, but trust me your a long way from needing to strengthen your engine.

I think intakes are to expensive, given the complexity (or lack there of). Thats why I made my own. Do a search for good intakes, cause I'm too tired to.

With 2K, this is what I would consider.

VIAS (aka MEVI) Variable Intake Manifold - $650 - Group Deals Section
Frakencar or comparable Intake - $100 (Like the one in my sig, more proffesional though)
Tranny Cooler - $45 - Pep Boys
Y-pipe - ~$225

Maxspeed Springs - $110 Ebay
Rear Sway Bar - $120 - Cattman
Front Strut Tower Brace - $28 - Ebay
Warpspeed Subframe Connectors - $260

And a good set of tires, I may be over budget though. Also, you should check out what maitenence the car is in need of.

Or blow it all on a used SC and have a killer sleeper car.

Oh yeah, take your pin stripes off. Unless your one of the .0001% who like that sort of thing.

Read the 4th Gen FAQ's they'll help you learn about a ton of things. It's alot to read, but it's worth it.

Well with the $4k your car would be significantly faster than a manual, plus it could endure drag racing for every day of the year. You can do a rebuild for half the price that will give you the speed, but you really need the reliability when shifts are that hard and quick. Search for Level 10 to find out more.

And where did you come up with those numbers? Did you add up all the claimed HP/TQ numbers j/k I'm running about 218hp and 225 toruqe, but that's "estimated" from my real world to the ground power numbers of 183fwhp and 193fwtq.

P()()RB@Y:

I seriously suggest that you start using the SEARCH function to answer all your questons. The answers are out there. Before long, this thread will be closed because the questions you're asking have been asked 100s of times this year.

Just asking the all-to-typical questions in this post without using the search function WILL NOT net you the best information.

Yes, P()()RB@Y, use the search function. Also, read the entire 4th Gen FAQ.

Then come back with any questions you may have.

Also, please don't ask "Which intake is best?" ... there is no answer to that question.

There is nothing wrong with auto maxs. There is still a ton of stuff that can be done to have fun. Aside from that why shift when all you have to do is hit the gas pedal. (Im a lazy **** when it comes to that $hit) Aside from that being 6'5" makes it hard to drive a 5spd Valve body mod does wonders also. Or just go nitrous in you max i dont care what you have (aside from the turbo) it's hard to keep up with me. But thats another issue for another time. lol fun is, fun is. Brian
