Need help diagnosing idle-stall problem.

I could use some advice from ya'll on my 96 I30t 5-speed.

I have had a low idle since I have owned the car. Usually around 500. Sometimes it dips to 400, and the car vibrates. I just tap the accelerator and it goes back up to 500.

In the last few days I have a new problem.
Three times while shifing into nuetral as I come to a stop the RPM hit 0 and the car stalles. It starts back up no problem.

Questions:

Do you think my constant low idle and stalling are connected?

What is the correct idle? 600? 700? The Hynes does not say. Either does the sticker under the hood.

Could the stalling be due to a problem with my TPS?

Should I adjust my idle and see if it helps?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Oh yhea, I am not getting any codes.

Sounds like you need to adjust your base idle. To do this you have to unplug the brown harness from your TPS then turn the screw at the top of it to adjust. After you do that you have to reset the ECU because you'll probably get some codes afterwards. On my spec sheet I printed out from work (Turnersville Nissan), it shows the base idle being 575 + or - 50 rpms (take it to round 600). Hope this will help you in solving the problem.

Thanks. Hope the idle adjustment will solve the stalling problem as well.

In Park, the idle should be 700 +/- 50, I think the other numbers posted where were the idle will be in gear.

A contributing factors to the stalling could be dirty TB, fuel filter, old sparkplugs etc... as well. Adjusting the idle is probably only the first step.

Well, it has the curb idle and base idle on the sheet. The base idle is what I gave and the curb idle is 625 + or - 50. Both idles are different for manuals and autos also. But anyways, he's got an excellent point at checking all those components. I would definately look at them also. Couldn't hurt.

I got the numbers out of the Chilton's manual and they were for a 96 auto. They're not really that different anyway, I'm sure things just got transposed differently here and there bewteen all the different books aout there.

Not to sound like a D$@K but my specs are straight from Nissan. I work at the dealer in South Jersey and printed out the specs from their computers. The base idle for an auto is 650 +/- 50 rpms and the curb idle for an auto is 700 +/- 50 rpms. Does chilton have the specs for a manual or does it show them as the same (I gave the manual specs previously)? Sorry if this comes off kind of cocky but I figured I'd just clear that up.

Thanks again for the replies.

I adjusted my idle. It is now a little over 600 while in neutral.

The car has not stalled again yet. Although the RPMs are still dropping to about 250-300 while coming to a stop in neutral or just reving the engine.
I had the full 60K mile service done at the local Infiniti dealership. Which would be 30K miles ago. Cleaned TB, spark plugs etc.. The fuel filter could stand a changing though.

This makes me think it is the TPS. I don't have the equipment to test the voltage so I may just replace it and see what happens. The TPS is like $50 or so right?

Not a problem, I'm sure the Nissan info is more accurate than Chilton's. I didn't see the part of your post about Nissan being the source at first, my bad.

BTW, the Chilton's says the 5 speed should idle at 625 +/- 50 rpm.
