Loud? Sounds like a jet engine reving up. My buddy did a straight exhaust to his VR6 and i can hear him ripping it a block away while im in my house. Yes it is illegal, but very intimidating. Id have to say yes on the performance gains since cats are pretty restrictive. You will notice the sound more than the power.
If my max was mine and not my parents i would have taken out the cat a long time ago.

You can't just take it off. You'll need a pipe to connect the Y and B. Do a search for test pipe.

Yeah... it'd be great.... for about 15 minutes.

Imagine a 3 hour trip with that inane drone,

Plus everyone around would be looking at you like an idiot....

Why should people care? Louder = faster!

(Just like yellow = faster!)

I figured his I.Q. was above 50 and that he would maybe think that a pipe would need to go where there once was something.
Hence the fact i said straight pipe.
Oh ya and if you really want some NOISE and power
Get a custom exhaust out the sides of the car. That would be true dual and look mean as hell. The piping could either come out a custom shaved sideskirt just behind the front fender or just in fron the rear fender. Just a thought.
PS - Then you would have to be able to outrun the cops or have an easily swappable exhaust.
IMO - GO FOR THE JET ENGINE (i will as soon as my dad's max is mine)

you could do it, if you wanted to fail emissions like a biotch.

There are ways around emissions test. It's called $50-250 depending on who you know.

PS If you don't have a cel on your Max, punch the damned cat and put a straight pipe through it, weld it in, and remove the resonator and get an aftermarket supressor. The supressor allows continous flow but does manage to keep the noise down quite a bit. My friend is running it on his 00 supercharged pony.

my buddy did that with his 94 GT stang, it was quicker and alot louder. it isn't worth it though, i mean i could barely talk to him while we were driving and a six cylinder would sound like crap anyways....

How would you go about finding a suppresor that fits? Does the length have to be tailored somehow to butt up on either end?

No, it's a matter of bending the piping. Looks like a Magnaflow muffler without the tips. I recommend t/c or s/c cars get 3", na should get 2.5 or 2.75. Another thing I hate is how many bends the Maxima exhaust takes. So restrictive. But then I looked under an Acura TL Type-S...yikes.

But the loud, obnoxious jet fighter sound goes away, and along comes this really cool "grumbling sound" that is only aggrivated over 4K RPM. Yes, the grumbling sound is that low.

If you leave the stock muffler and b-pipe with resonator on, there will be only a very small increase in noise. The cat isn't designed for noise attenuation, after all. On the other hand, there will be only the slightest increase in performance as well, if any. Not worth the effort, really.
