'Oly moly! Look at all those 215/50-17s!

I remember when I was looking to mount tires a few months ago for my 17x7.5 wheels that it seemed like there were only two or three total tire choices in 215/50-17. Now I notice that the Toyo T1-S, various Dunlop, Yokohama, and Pirelli tires are available in this size. Have they always been there, or are these relatively recent developments?

I don't know if there is a recent explosion of tires in the 215-50-17 size, but I do want to ask why you are going with that size rather than 235-45-17?

I'm not (I don't think). The narrower tires are lighter and everything, a tad cheaper, and may stretch better on a 7.5" tire than the 235, but I'll probably stick with 235 anyway. The info was hopefully useful for people getting 17x7 wheels and are concerned about staying within spec.
