4th Gen Automatic Trans longevity

how long is a well taken care of automatic tranny expected to last in 4th Gen...? 125K....150K...175+K...??

I got a line on a 96 SE, to replace mine, for a song...but it has 97500 on the clock...but the price is still good even if i spend 800 on a rebuilt or salvage yard tranny...

thoughts.....?

Thanks again....JB

its all depends on the driver and luck. i seen car come in with over 200k and still fie and the i see maximas with low milage and almost falling apart. If you treat it well it will last a long time. % speeds always should last longer. The clutch disc might wear out every 100k or so but its not a big job at all. Auto trannys have too much left to chance in them:if the fluid pressure is right it might work well, if this gear moves in at the right time, if this is the proper clearence space all that means more room for breakage

I replaced my auto tranny at 205,000 miles. I felt that was pretty good life out of a tranny.

That may be but I haven't seen a manual with a 60' as good as my auto.

Actually I don't think a manual transmission has even turned a 2.0 60' yet.

You could be right but I haven't seen any time slip to back it up. Still the way most people talk you would think the auto is slow out of the hole, ain't so.

Easy big fella

Just talking about the reliability of the AUTO.

I have 118,000 miles on mine and the last 50,000 have been hell. I have had the car since 69,000 miles.

So I will say this...the auto tranny will hold up to normal abuse.

BUT throw neutral drops into the equation and then it's broke city. I have NEVER done a neutral drop

I've got 155000 on mine. Fluid changes every 30k with normal dino fluid. Mine is getting weak. It is in no way dead yet, but the shifts are getting slower and rougher. I guess I need to start deciding whether to convert to 5spd or rebuild the Auto...both cost about the same.

I've driven worse. The 4th gen tranny is perfect for what it was designed to do. 5 speeds have more serious issues than I've ever seen on an auto.

Its all about luck. Mine went at 36k, then converted a 5spd, whose bearings failed 2k later. Rebuilt bearings myself and so far no prob at 40k.

Mine went at 81k. Bought the car with 71k. Not cool. I completely lost second and fourth gear.

I have 25k on the new one, and it's still doing well.

I think it depends on how you take care of the car, and how you drive. Never go from R-D without coming to a complete stop, for example.

haha well of course it won't be slow when you're running 100+ shot of Nitrous, I think most people just don't like the 4th gen auto tranny because of its loss of horsepower to the wheels and its lag between shifts. At least those were the two things that bothered me the most before I got my Infiniti.

I disagree. Its still luck. My car was owned for the first 26k by my stepfather who put on 26k in 5 years, and i had it for the next 10. The car was always serviced on time @ nissan. I used to have a cavalier with 140k and abused the hell out of it until 170k, tranny didn't die at all. Its just luck, I didn't do any neutral drops either, just one day, it started shifting slower into 3rd gear, slipping, and eventually only 1st & second worked (manually).

My 98 auto has 73k miles and it's fine.

My 97 5 speed has 117k and it seems okay to me so far.. although the clutch and shifter act up sometimes.. or maybe it's just me.

i think the autos on 4th gens are okay for the most part, but most cars have some issues.. u can't get them all perfect.

Although i do think that some cars just have it as a common problem..
when i had my 93 SE, the tranny died at 86k miles and was on the verge of going again at 106k. A lot of 3rd gen owners have had to rebuilt their auto trannies before they hit 100k, most others - before 130k. Some have lasted longer, some haven't replaced it at all.. but it is more common on 3rd gens.. i guess maybe because of a lot more higher mile cars being they are older.. Though I heard it mentioned that 3rd gens and 4th gens have the same auto trannies? sure doesn't feel like it.

so in conclusion
it's still about luck
although your chances are less on some cars..
like Toyotas..
i've driven a lot of cars when i worked as a vallet and i gotta say.. Toyotas have the best feeling automatics..

Tranny Condition

I've got 89,800 miles on my car so far- in the past 5 years that I've had it. The tranny has been very reliable. Back when I was really ignorant and stupid(maybe still so), I did a couple neutral drops. I let it rip once at 6500RPM in a parking lot, and left about 40 feet or so of rubber on the ground. The car is running fine, but there must be some sort of severe damage and wear cause by just that one incident. The tranny is still working fine, so I would have to give it some credit.

Automatic Bliss

My automatic is drained and filled every 25,000 to 30,000 miles and I am now mixing in Castrol Syntec Dexron III after a complete transmission flush at 148,000 miles where they used Mobil 1 dino.

Did my second drain and fill with synthetic yesterday and still runs like new at 192,500 on the clock.

I'm happy so far.

Matt got the 1.8 60ft with slicks. Drag radials...best was a 2.0 IIRC.

HAHAHAH Toyotas? Man, the Camry my family had died at 51k (auto). My dad's 3rd gen's auto tranny lasted 140k miles.

My auto has almost 90K on it and it's still holding up. But when we pulled the differential out to swap the LSD in, it didn't look so good. The spider gears were about gone and I don't know how much longer it would have held out. Too many 1 wheeled burnouts with the blower I guess.
