Milage

I'm looking into buying a used Maxima, and was talking to a dealer.

According to him if I'm too concerned about milage I should get a brand new one as, as most dealers get their cars from auctions (Manheim PA on the east coast) , and apparently a LOT of milage meddling goes on.

Now what I'm wondering is how easy is it to meddle with the milage on Maximas.

from my other post:
My dillema is that in the $9k price range I can either get say a 97/98 base GXE with 40/50 k miles, or 97/98 Loaded GLE/SE with 90/100 k miles.
Once the money is spent I'm really not going to have any remaining for repairs, what sort of repairs did you guys have to get done at around 100K miles?

Its not easy at all to meddle with the odometer on a Maxima. They have one-way locking pins on each number setting. In order to even get to those, you'll have to break the plastic around the odometer housing. You can see if the plastic is broken by looking directly at the odometer. There are thin plastic "teeth" in between each number on the odometer. The 97 and up Maximas have ECU controlled digital odometers.

Very true. If my dad didn't notice that the odometer numbers were all scratched (through the middle, going vertically) i Would be driving a '97 5spd. It's a joke how easy it is to roll back the numbers. Even easier with most digital odometers nowadays...
