My max is scaring me

I have a black 96 bone stock auto with 80K on it. So here's the story. I am coming home from work tonight, and i smoke my tires while i am leaving the parking lot like i always do. I come up to the highway merge and i floor it. Next thing i know, my car is hardly moving, and it wont go past 3000 and it took about 20 seconds to get to 3000 while still in first. I have no CEL lights or anything. So i am on a 65 mph highway and i cant go faster than 20. I pull over within minutes and restart my car. Miricaloulousy, it actually drove normally when i restarted it. I hope to god that it was in some kind of "safe" mode, because i would kill myself if i did something to the tranny. Please tell me what happened to my car. It still has no CEL lights or anything on it. Just a knock sensor code in self-diagnostic.

Look in your owners manual. By spinning the tires just right, it puts the car into O/D Safe mode and it stays stuck in 3rd gear.

This happened to me once, and I never restarted the car and went straight to the dealer, who was closing, and dropped my car off. ebmorgan picked me up in his I30 at the dealership, and said "No man, look in my owners manual!" Sure enough, that's what it was.

I had to wait until the next morning to get my car out of the shop because they had closed....

How embarrassing.

Your tranny is fine.

The thing that scared me was that peeps say in safe mode, the car still shifts. From the time i first stepped on the gas, it went to a little under 3K and stayed there, no shifts whatsoever.

Nope, it doesn't shift. I have experienced this first hand. You are stuck in 3rd gear.

Like I said, read the owner's manual. It specifically says that, I believe.

Well if you know something's wrong with you car, maybe you shouldn't keep smoking it and flooring then ask why it's getting worse?

Observation

Up until Voltman entered the conversation, THIS is an example of exactly how requests for information should go down on this board.

Perfectly polite, a good question, an excellent response, and a courteous thank you at the end.

This is how we should respect each other!

Voltman, I was not dissing you, just pointing out the interaction between Dave and iansw.

Understood. I just thought that suggesting not punishing his car when he had other issues would be helpful.

True. I punish the hell out of my car, but I know the consequences, and know how to maintain it.
