99 SE with 190k... worth anything?

Greetings-

Been a lurker here for a long time and have gained valuable information about the best car I ever had; my thanks to you all. The time has come to put my baby out to pasture. As I will be a new homeowner soon, I have decided to go for a pickup truck this time (will be useful on the weekly trips to Home Depot ).

I am about to purchase a new Toyota Tacoma. As such, I plan to trade in my Black 99 SE. Although the car looks great (small crack in rear tail light and scratch on bumper... otherwise in great shape) and runs pretty damn well (I think a new clutch is going to be needed soon), it does have 190,000 miles on it. Any ideas as to what I can expect for trade-in value? I am sure I could get more if I sold it myself, but I don't feel comfortable selling a car that I know will need a new clutch soon (although I could disclose this)... I also really don't feel like dealing with the hassle that comes with selling a used car.

So, can I expect to get anything for my Maxima from the Toyota dealer, or is he just going to offer me $500 (or less!) and sell it to an auctioneer?

Thanks,
Tom

That's a ton of miles on a 3 year old car. Well considering 99s with 100K go for 10K or so. I'd say you are looking at 6-7 retail and 3-5 trade in. At that mileage options will be little or no factor in the price. Ever think of trying to sell it on the org for 5K or so? You may get a few bites.

This seems like a good candidate for meccanoble. He just totalled his maxima (not his fault) and is looking for a 5- speed SE. He is in NJ, as well. You might look him up. He should have cash soon from the Ins company, as well...

I think he is referring to buying the Tacoma and keeping the Max, simulaneously looking for engine to swap in with less mileage.

What would your asking price be if you sold it yourself, with the disclosure that it will probably need a new clutch soon? You'd probably be very surprised how many bites you'd get for a decent price! Also, what options does it have? Leather, BOSE, auto climate control, etc?

Go to www.kellybluebook.com and look it up. I would suggest you print out the page and bring the printout to the Toyota dealer.

Worth more than that!

If it had NO engine and had been hit in the back and the front it would be worth more than $500! You could take it to the boneyard and they'd give you a grand or two without blinking, as would I, or the dealer who just gave you $500 of the sticker price on the new truck. Sell it on this org. Sorry I'm so far away here in AZ. KBB.com might not give a very accurate price for such mileage. If the engine compression is good, forget how many miles it has. It's a better indicator of previous use/abuse than mileage.

Hey - www.kbb.com gave a "Private Party" value of $9,220! That's a 5 speed 1999 SE with 190K miles, no leather or BOSE.

i really doubt anyone would buy a 190k maxima for over 5,000 EVEN though its worth more. Statistically its worth a lot but to the average consumer its a car ready to die. Although i may be interested ONLY for the simple fact that i have a 95 max that was in an accident. I have 112,000 miles on my engine and 54,000 on my trans with a brand new clutch. If possible i may take all the deadmeat stuff on the 99 out and put my stuff in. I would buy the car off of u for 3,000 if you interested and just switch the parts. How does that sound? i just gotta make sure there won't be a problem.

I think you can get 5-6 grand for it.

I have 118k miles on a 97 and i'm driving around 90 miles each way to school, plus i use it to deliver pizza and to go everywhere else.. 3k miles in a month of driving it

But the way it drives, i don't see how it can't go another 100k miles without any problems...

Where are those guys with 200k miles + ?????

Miles don't seem to correspond with the cars performance in Maximas.

I suggest just finding out what you can get for it from the dealer on the trade in..
also, it can't hurt to advertise it on sites like autotrader.com and cars.com...... and just any places that offer free ads, so you don't feel bad paying for anything that might not help..
but thats how i found my car and there are a ton of other people looking.. some dont care for milage.. condition could be the only issue...

^^^ good idea

or u can find some desperate guy on this website that is in need of a maxima and sell it to him for a better price. Knock two birds out with one stone. Sell your car at a better price than the dealer AND help a fellow org member out. PLus u would sell your car a lot faster if u went through one of us with less hastle....

With that many miles, new water pump might be needed.

Congrats on having such mileage for the max. I have accumulated 30k in my first year owning the max (now it's at 120k). If I were to buy your Max, I might want to change the water pump soon (rated to last 200k), which is around 500 or so (at the dealership).

If I am in the market for the Max, I would probably getting your Max for around 4.3k or just a bit less than that.

Thanks for the advice all. God I am going to miss lurking around here (looking around, I can't find anything close to this board for a Tacoma)

KBB is flawed I think. After a certain amount of miles, their prices dont change. A guy here at work says most dealers use a "Black Book" to decide what they will pay you for trade in. However, for high miliage cars, they will usually just offer you a flat amount and then unload it to an auction.

Anyhow, called the bank last night to get my pink slip sent (had a 4 year loan... paid it off). They are processing it and it should be in my hands in 3 weeks.

I suppose my best course of action is to see what the dealer will give me (course I wont tell him I have a trade until I get my best price on the Tacoma (or will it be a Frontier?) ). If it less than 2.5 - 3k ish, I will try to sell it myself. I will let you guys know what they offer so that the next guy that runs up 190k will have an idea. Oh, and if I do decide to sell it, I will post pics here (the car has no mods at all... totally stock SE) just in case someone is interested.

Thanks again to a great community.

Seriously,
If you came up on here before I got my 97... I would give you 5 grand for that car providing it runs well..

It's obviously all highway miles.. which do little wear to the car. There have been 3rd gens pushing 400k miles and talks of some with even more.. and still running fine. Miles are an issue only when it comes to reselling the car, since a good majority of people are just scared of buying a car like that thinking it's on the verge of dying. 190k is not that bad.. I haven't heard of a VQ engine just dying from being worn out and starting to eat oil and stuff.. I would buy it and drive it until the engine blew, then like Sprint said.. a new engine would only be like 700$ and you can buy one with like 50-60k miles for that much.... clutch is another 400$.. so you have a 99 Max with a new clutch, 60k mile engine for under 2,000$.. ossuming you might spend a little more $ on some regular maintenance things....

I think this is a great opportunity for someone who has ***** to fix things up on cars, to own a pretty new car for a steal.
And also see how much a VQ can really go

Yeah...you should check out the Frontier. I just picked up a 2002 4x4 crew cab w/supercharger last weekend. Check out msn.com the carpoint lets you do side x side compares of different vehicles.

Skinsfan44,

You know....a 5-speed convertion is around 2k (mine is 97 Auto), but yours need a new engine and clutch, which is $1500 of repair.

So...the bottom line is, please let us know what you decide. I believe I am in your list of potential buyer here.

Keep us posted.

first off the kelly blue book value for TRADE IN is 5895 with you 190000 miles!

To an individual the price is almost 7 grand. 190,000 miles on a max is not much. I have 230,000 on my 3rd gen and it still running strong!!! don't let anyone rip you off on the sale of your car.If you sell your car for much less than these prices just take it as you have a kind heart and doing someone a favor!

190,000 isnt alot to us because we know all about the Max, but to the average buyer it is. When they see a 3 year old car with that many miles they scatter in most cases, anyway good luck trying to sell it.

Only Owner.

Thanks again all. I emailed back the folks that emailed me.

My plan is as follows. Get the title (bank said it will be mine in 3 weeks). See what a dealer offers on trade-in. See what Car Cash offers (friend said they paid well for an old Toyota Corolla he sold them). If I dont get a reasononable offer from either of those two sources, I will sell it myself, including putting some pictures up here of its condition for you all that expressed interest.

I feel funny with all the interest being shown as it is nothing more than a stock SE... can't hold a candle to some of the beauties I see on this site. Nonetheless, definitely the best car I ever owned.

Will report back here in 3 weeks (once I get title and can move on my new purchase), hopefully sooner.

Tom

Don't know if it was mentioned already or not (didn't read the whole thread), but...

I'm registered over there as SteVVT-i for my fiance's Highlander, but it's as dead as a doornail.

Well I have an older copy of the BLACK BOOK >>>>

it is dated around February 2002 so the price will be lower. This is the book that the dealers use to give trade-in quotes, etc. They also use this book to estimate what they will bid on a auction, etc. The prices are basically what the vehicles were selling for at auctions, etc.:

X-CL CLN AVE RGH
1999 SE 15700 15200 13700 11900

DEDUCT 800 W/O AUTO TRANSMISSION
ADD 400 SUNROOF
ADD 500 LEATHER

Since you have 190K miles it said that the mileage adjustment NOT to exceed 50% of publish price. Anytime a vehicle is over 100K miles it is labled as ROUGH(RGH) according to 2 dealers that I have talked to so take what they said with a grain of salt. So basically from what they told me 11900-800=11100/2= $5550 now remember these figures are from the begining of the year so as much as $1000 or more could have dropped the price, also you need a new clutch from what you said. This also brings down the price. Why not keep it as a beater car ??? The engine is sure to last to at least 250K miles or more if it has beeb taken care of properly !!! God Bless.

another idea...

my dad's car blew a head gasket and he donated it to a charity..

they give you a tax write off.. i don't know exactly what they gave him, it doesn't even matter because the car was a 1987 mercury sable.

but i was told by someone that they give bluebook value for it.

another possible option..
they come and pick your car up and give you a tax write off form for it.. they don't even care if the car runs or not.. they take anything

Thanks SteVTEC and JULIAN. Good info

NYCe MaXiMa- Also good advice, but I would rather get some more cash to help on the down payment of the new truck.
