My Max exhibits oversteer of all things in the snow. Usually it has understeer that is readily controllable by just backing off the gas. If I back off the gas in the snow-it gets even worse and I almost spin. I look like a damn rear wheel drive car sliding around.

Question: for traction in snow ice, would it hurt the tranny/clutch to start out in 2nd gear?

As long as it actually starts in 2nd, I'd say its a feature of the tranny... My TBird had it and having RWD it was a godsend sometimes if the end of a road wher eyou had to stop was on a slope... My tranny is about fried, but that's because it was a Ford Design flaw... no matter how u used it they were $hit from 93-97

I'd have to say that suspension mods help in these situations. I was surprised how much better my car handled compared to when I drove it last winter stock.

No traction

We got some snow here today and i too was all over the place. My ABS kicked in almost everytime i braked, i couldn't go fast at all, i even had to walk up my 700 foot driveway. I had a Beretta before this car and i got 200% better snow traction. I made it up my hill everytime and this is the first storm and i couldn't even make it. Anyone have any suggestion for snow tires????
