Should I get this '98 Black on Black GLE?

All right I had been hunting for a good looking maxima for quite some time and am really tempted with this one 1998 with 77,000 miles for $10k at a dicount dealer in VA.

It' Black has all options sunroof, heated leather, ABS, Bose etc, the only things missing I can think of are Side air bag, and traction control.

It's automatic, and YES I want it that way!

carfax:
01/14/98 PA 11 MOTOR VEHICLE DEPT. TITLE (Leased Vehicle)
03/31/01 NJ REGISTRATION EVENT/RENEWAL
04/18/01 EASTERN REGION 47,934 REPORTED AT AUTO AUCTION
05/07/01 DUNELLEN, NJ 47,937 VEHICLE IN DEALER INVENTORY
05/24/01 NEWARK, NJ 48,135 MOTOR VEHICLE DEPT.
05/26/01 NJ 48,472 INSPECTION/THEFT DETERRENT EQUIPPED
08/21/02 SHERWOOD, AR 76,349 MOTOR VEHICLE DEPT.

Does any one know how the "theft deterrant"/alarm shows up in carfax?

Do you guys think I should get it??

I'd get it. I always regret not getting a black on black maxima. I think black looks the best on this car.

I definately like the color combination of black on black, the only thing I'm still wondering about is $10k a decent price to pay for a 98 GLE with 77k miles.

What sort of service would I need to do on this car if no records are available

I called nissan and gave them the vin # the only thing they could tell me was that with in waranty , a headlight, the radio unit, and an air bag harness was replaced.

I called up the place that replaced the airbag harness and they said it's just a wire that was changed coz the light was going off.

Where is it in VA (you can PM me this so someone does not ****** it out from under you- I already have mine!)? Just wondering if it was near me.

I paid 10,500 for a 96 GLE w/ 58K in June. It was equipped how I wanted it (except for sh!++y rims), and was 1-owner. I think that I would much rather have paid 10K for what you are looking at, but I like what I have now. I would jump on it. I often wish mine was black...

It's a very small place in woodbridge, they only advertise in the paper, I took the pic my self.

Heck comparing what other guys have been scoffing up for their cars, I'm rushing in and dropping a deosit for that car I've waited a whole damn month to find a black maxima with black leather.

But this one has had a funky range of owners as I postd in my carfax detail, what I'm wondering is how the hell did it get to Arkinsas.

This may sound like a dumb question, but I always thought black on black meant that the door handles and window trim were black as well as the body color, in which case only the black SE model is black on black. Or does it just refer to black interior with black exterior, even though the door handles are chrome?

It refers to black exterior and black interior not the chrome handles and window trim.

Looks nice. GLEs are usually loaded with standard features. Only negative is it has the old SE sawblade wheels and is an auto (unless you want those things). But as for price-sounds very fair-have them give you a warranty for 3,000 miles or so just in case. My 2 cents.

I do not know either. There are large auctions all over the place. Many cars in this area were bought at wholesale and sold at a large auction in PA or VA. For some reason, there are a few large auctions that attract dealers from the whole region. It could be that the person who bought the car moved to AK for school or a job, then moved back. There are tons of reasons for why it might have been there.

Are you living in VA now (you profile says NJ, I think)? I was just wondering. I wirk in springfield, and the woman whse job I now have used to live in Woodbridge.

Around here, 10K for that car is not bad. Is that what they quoted you, or was that the deal that you struck after negotiating. If that was the starting price, you should shoot for $9K, but even @ $10K, that is not a bad deal.

Just my 2 cents...

I bought my car up in northern VA. Seems like wholesalers love it there Sounds like a good deal, similar to the deal I got on mine. Go for it.

Not at all odd in the wholesaler world. Probably had some chromies on there and needed some wheels to replace them.

Just check the car over real good, bring a mechanic friend when you buy too. That way you can point out all of the little "problems" you find and get a better deal

Come on now....it's a 98! $10k isn't bad and don't worry about that air bag thing....My buddy used to work for a Nissan dealership. I guess a lot of them had that problem(including mine).

whoa

hey that's a really nice car!!! i'm looking for a 98 black on black SE/GLE as well
it's a nice deal for a 98. so far i've seen then up here in ny for 11 and on, with below 80k mileage. it sounds like a really good deal to me. then again i saw a beautiful silvery 98 with everything get sold for 8.7k at an auction. but you can actually drive it and check it out real well. so i suggest you go over everything and check every hole in that maxima before you buy it. i would. the 10k tag is negotiable.. but it sounds like a sweet deal to me. good luck

Well, Im new here so please excuse the newbie status. Anyways sounds like a good deal to me. I bought a black on black 98 SE 5 speed 3 weeks ago and had spent 3 weeks price shopping and looking on dealer lots. From what I was seeing that is a good price.

If that is a good price I must have gotten a good deal. I went private seller. Mine is basicly fully loaded. Heated leather seats, power windows/locks/sunroof/seats, the auto climate control thingy. 40k miles. I paid 12250. Love the thing so far.

Allright guys thanks for all the advice, I went in and dropped a deposit for the car, I should get it by Tuesday or Wednesday after they do the inspections for MD.

The asking price for the car was 10800, over the phone the dealer came donw to 10300, he alleged that he only did that for me as I had physically dropped by and seen another car. I went in and talked him down to 10000, he woulodn't go any lower as I had him do the MD saftey inspection and he already had the VA inspection done.

The antenna is broken and the ABS light is always on so he is going to work on that. The floor mats are missing and the front 2 tires are kinda old so we are stil trying to negotiate something with that. The keyless entry remote is missing, where other than the expensive dealer can I get thaat from?

The car apparently has the 'gold package' (what's that about?), awesome black leather (no nicks or tears) with burlwood accents, drove very smoothly breaks worked well, sound system was nice and loud, climate control was good, and the pick up for the car was just the best, esp since my totalled car was 91 base model celica 1.7 liter!!

The dealer claimed that he bought the car from Nissan financial services in PA, where they get off lease care , they apparently had around 1000 maximas!! he only got this one coz he thought it was a good deal

kratz74: the deaer is a small time guy and only offers 1 month 1000 miles on all his cars.

I just talked to another friend and he came to the conculsion that the guy who had this car must have raced the car quite often, as the 2 front tire are really old and the back 2 are new, may be they were swapped.

The ABS light is on, so that may have been disabled to let the sucker do 360's, donuts, and other funky **** like driving with the handbrake pulled to make it skidd.

what do you guys think...?

ABS light could be for different reasons, from a fuse to a low brake line pressure. And bad fron tires could be from not rotating. Other than that, there seems to be nothing wrong with it. Do this- ask to take the car and let an independent mechanic look it over. I paid my mechanic $30 to do a full-look over: test drive, run the diagnostics, pull wheels and inspect brakes, quick alignment check, inspect the frame and undercarriage for bends or repairs, and to look at all of the fluid levels.

Also, about the rims- they used 95-96 SE rims on all 97-99 GLEs. That was standard.

If you can get him to fix the ABS light problem, I would say $10K is good. If not, tell him a couple hundred to get that fixed seems reasonable. About the 2 bad tires- $175 mounted (at Sears, with a price-match from a tirerack.com quote) and you can have 2 brand new Dunlop SP Sport A2s and be on your way with a great-looking car at a good price!

The dealr said he fixed the ABS lights, as well as changed the brake pads, for the inspection I'm supposed to get the MD saftey inspection done my self and if anything fails I get he fixes it for me.

As for the tires I'll just have to buy 2 tires either from Sears or Costco.

I'll post pics when I get the car.

Good choice on the Max. I bought a 98 GLE (white pearl, black leather) a few months ago, and love it. The Dunlop SP A2's are awesome tires, so if you can find em (they were on backorder when I wanted them), get em.

On a personal note... you guys on the 4th gen forum are MUCH nicer than the 3rd gen forum!!! A lot less sarcastic, just a bunch of folks who like their Maximas. I have a 91 and a 98 (can't split from either), but much prefer reading the 4th gen forum.

Hey, don't go there on better and all. I can't really compare the two Maximas without gripes about each.

91: Lacks the power of the 98
No ABS (not sure if I like ABS though???)
No air bags
Not "sealed" like the cabin in the 98

98: No handles on the doors to hold on to when going for a hell ride
ABS standard (that e-brake is really fun!!!)
Sunroof needs deflector or its LOUD (very nice in 91)
Seats are not as comfortably shaped

These are just a few things that I notice between the tow cars. I love both my Maximas, and will not get rid of either. But, you guys here on the 4th gen forum are a lot nicer to deal with. You even mention that you "passed" a Mustang at "high" speed on the 3rd gen, and your thread goes away, let alone ask a question that's been covered any time since 1996 (SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH).
