Camera Mount

I'm going to build an in car camera mount like this:
http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/contri...t/buildit.html

I also wanted to get other angles. Has anyone build a camera mount that goes out the sunroof and angles slightly down. Or maybe even buy a smaller camera and mount it in the fog light?

Any ideas would be great. I'm thinking of buying one of those little security cameras for under $20 and then mounting in my fog light. I guess I could then just run the output of the camera into the input of my camcorder and record everything from that.

Did anyone else do anything similar?

I ducttaped a camera to the rear deck.

That was my camera mount.

I have an X10 camera mounted between the rear-view mirror and the windshield. Here is a side-view:

The mount base is held on by the three bolts that hold the rear-view mirror on. The mount arm extends down the back of the mirror arm and the camera is riveted to the mount arm so that I cannot see if from my position. It peeks out just under the sunshade stripe across the top of the windshield.

The front-passenger can see it, and I have been asked about it a couple of times...

It's there to record my POV in case of accident or whatever. It does not record sound at this time, for privacy and legal resons (my passengers probably don't want their conversations recorded, and I don't want to be charged with any wiretap violations!) It currently feeds a cheap $60 VCR that is mounted under the passenger seat, buit I have to hit the record button and it's pain.

The next iteration of the design will use one of those IR doohickeys that they use to allow factory steering-wheel stereo controls to work an aftermarket stereo. It records the IR pattern from a remote control and replays it when it gets the right input. I'll program it with record & stop commands for the VCR, and then make a control box that will tell the IR doohickey to pulse the record signal when the engine starts, and the stop signal when the engine stops again. This will allow me to mount the VCR in the trunk and I don't have to remember to hit record & stop.

Cost so far; $40 camera, $60 VCR, $60 for the IR doohickey and about $20 in electronic parts for the controller box.

Look on the face of someone who just ran a red but sees my video evidence that proves *I* had the green? I would imagine that it would be 'priceless'.

I'll also put record, stop, ff, rw & play buttons on a custom panel on my dash (in the DIN slot under the factory stereo). I would LOVE to have a tiny 6" LCD screen that shows me the output from the VCR - for instant playbacks and stuff...

Nice.

I was thinking of something similar in a fog light, like this:

We had a camera mount in my friend's WRX a few weeks back during autocross. And I wanted to do something similar this coming weekend for Autocross. And with this smaller camera, I could do some motorcycle mounts and get footage with them.

do you intend to incorporate shock-protection material into the housing which mounts the VCR into the trunk in order to prevent damage and loss of evidence in the case of a severe accident?

I've always wanted to do that, ever since seeing some punks in a city services truck screwing around with people on the road.

Basically, driving slow, braking for no reason, changing lanes, and laughing the whole time.

I have a simple mout that attached to the headrest posts that works very well that only cost me about $10 to build.

My other mount i made consists of alot of 1.5"OD aluminum tubing and the suction(sp?) cups that bod shops use to remove large dents.. there is a nadle on the top to easily releive the pressure and let you remove the mount without harming the paint or pulling the pannel. The mount hangs over the drivers side front corner and the camera can face pretty much any direction. I have the camera inside a plexiglass box for more protection. i will post pics (along with some video ) on my site sometime soon

This would be very cool to do..... I am big into video editing and all that stuff.... me and my friends make movies all the time. This could come in handy. How long did one of these take you to make? Instead of making one, can you buy one somewhere?

You can buy a few different kinds. There is a company that makes the headrest style mount, but they charge over $100. I've got the aluminum, and all the tools. I just need to get the camera mount that I want. It'll cost under $30 to make myself. You could do it even cheaper, with U-brackets and a solid metal design.
