Dirty start and ugly gunk in the intake manifold...
Ok, searching didn't really come up with anything and I'm hoping this is pretty easy problem to fix.
I've owned the car for a week today and the thing starts funny sometimes. Occasionally when I start the car there is this wierd sratching noise for a split second. To me that sounds like starter, but I don't know.
Another thing is that I took the thing to this local shop that I trust to get an oil change. Usually I do it myself, but it was a busy day and didn't have the time to do it myself. When the guy was done he went and started the car and noticed the rough start and told me that a guy had come in sometime recently and had a similar problem. He then pulls off the plastic tubing between the filter and the intake manifold and pulls on the throttle cable a little, sticks his hand in there and when he pulled out his hand there was this ugly black gunk on his fingers. He told me that some simple gas additives could clean up that stuff, but I wanted to ask here before I spent any money on that stuff.

First off.. go to www.motorvate.ca and read up on cleaning the throttle body and fixing that starter problem.
You can get a can of throttle body cleaner from the local auto shop for a few dollars and just go ahead and clean that up yourself.
all you need is a few clean rags and an old tooth brush.
takes about an hour at most to do the throttle body.
That noise is most likely the starter. Seems to be a common problem. Doesn't mean it's gonna die anytime soon though. I've lived with the same problem for a few years now. Happens more on really cool mornings.
good luck.
