Yes, I should have said that in the post. Also the horn is working perfect too. I just need a cruise control switch for the side. The airbag hook ups are the same.

So all I need is the steeringwheel for the '97-'99? The airbags are the same for '95-'96? And does this affect your title any? How did you remove the airbags, isn't a special tool required?
Thanks again,
-Cyrus

man, that is beautiful, any way you can do a detailed write up? How did you manage the airbags? is not dangerous to mess with those since they can go off and ruin your whole interior?

I have a 96.... and wow i dind't know the 99+ looked so different. I haven't seen the 2k+ ones... are they cooler? If so, you think they fit? Probably not... but yea i'd love to go out to a junkyard and find one of those but if they're junkd.... most likely the air bag's been deployed. Very nice job.

This is excellent. I called around and tried to research performing this mod a long time ago and basically came to the conclusion that it couldn't be done cheaply. The actual steering colums have different part numbers between 95-96 and 97-99 so I assumed that the wheels would have different splines. I guess that shows you what happens when you assume... I'm glad to be proven wrong.

How much did this cost you?
Where did you get the new steering wheel/air bag from?
Did you get any problems with the air bag controller?
How long did it take you to perform this?
What plastic piece did you have to cut?
Do you have any detailed pics during the swap?

Thanks...

it cost me 300 for bag and wheel shipped. pays off to look around. and i to was told that it wouldnt fit. look at it now! no problems with airbag controller. plugged right into the 96 harness. it will deploy on impact as expected.took roughly 30-45 minutes to do this. on the back of the wheel there is a square cut out and a round one. the round one has to be made bigger so that the square one will allow access to get the wires through. i took some wire snips and just made two small cuts to the plastic that overlaps the metal. hard to explain but not hard to do. cant tell b/c its on the back of the wheel. sorry didnt take pics while i was doing this. looks like i should do a write up on it. I think i am the first ever to do this. that i know of anyways

Oh Yeah, very important. if you take the bag off. ALWAYS disconnect the battery for 10-15 minutes. gives the airbag module or whatever it is time to discharge. yeh i was scared. i stuck my hand under it and unplugged it standing outside the car. didnt want it to go off and hit me but it didnt....anybody need a bag and wheel (96) i got it in the for sales....

That nice wheel was exclusive to 97-99 Maxima SEs. In 2000, every Maxima had it, GXE to GLE, and they were also the color of the dash, too, not just black in the 97-99 SEs.

I think the 2002s got a little nicer with a bit of chrome. I saw one in a 2002 Altima. Nice.

well i know everybody has opinions and i think the 2000 ones look cheap. and the new 2002 ones look too weird for me. i think this is the best looking wheel for the max. i think the 97-99 one is way more detailed than the 2000 one.

Does that mean the wheel he showed in the pics only comes in black and I wouldn't be able to get the brown/tan one? Maybe I'll have to try foliatec on my dash at the same time...

OK the 97-99 SE's *ALL* have the black steering wheel. even the brown interior ones. tan or whatever you want to call it. i went to buy a 98 se and it had tan interior with a black wheel.

Jsut an idea for the Tan guys like myself, I have a 97-99 GLE steering wheel, which is still much better then the old style one, IMO. Also if you look closely the SE one only differs from the GLE one by the middle piece where the horn is depressed, I bet that with the right paint you could make it match a tan one and put it on there. Then again it just may be too much work.

This is incorrect. You have to look a bit closer since the 97-99 SE steering wheel itself is different than 97-99 GXE/GLE. Not only is it different in terms of shape (spokes) the 97-99 steering wheel has perforated leather on the spoke and the adjacent rim.

This is what happens when you stick a 97-99 SE airbag on a 97-99 GXE/GLE wheel

The width of the airbag spoke is not only a different shape, but its wider than the steering wheel spokes. The contours don't even line up. Look at the left spokes; the misalignment is evident in those 2 left spokes.

Wow the difference is very dramatic. Thanks for pointing that out.

why would anybody want to paint it in the first place.ALL 97-99 SE's with the tan interior have the black wheel and airbag. i think it would look cheap if you paint it.

I don't think the balkc wheel goes to well with the tan interior, just my opinion.
