I don't think they make a Cali spec Y-pipe. They ONLY make (atleast used to) Fed spec.

However, it could just be that its not installed correctly. My cousin had some kind of metal ring hitting his downpipe pipe and that was causing the rattling sound. Get underneath there & ensure you have nothing hanging lose.
Good Luck

i'm sure it's the metal hanger that's near the cat converter that's making the rattling noise. it needs to be taken off or bent inwards towards the pipe.

and i also think that budget only makes fed spec pipes

You got that rattle sound too? I hear that above 2K too. but I thought maybe the metallic "chattering" sound was from my 2K1 muffler which has a variable pressure valve inside. I read on the 5th gen. forum that some (& only some) folks with jwt pop or stillen intake have heard a similar sound. I'll have to look into it (with some of the suggestions offered by others in this thread).

BTW: Budget has Cali-spec y-pipe. Jeff from Budget confirmed they that (I asked on behalf of someone with a '99 in CA). To date, Budget has shipped 5 to U.S.

My friend is installing my 2k2 muffler today. Ill has him check out the sound since he installed it. I have a 95-cail spec.

How does u have a modified 5th gen muffler? What did u do to it? I was wondering how I install the muffler. Beside the muffler, I have another section. I think it is the resonator but I don’t know what that looks like. The person gave me the 5th gen muffler said it's from the cat-back because he replaced his cat-back exhaust.

Should I just put a straight pipe since I can pass emissions anyways?

Does he have a pop charger with a velocity stack? I'd like to hear his impression once it's installed.

I bought the muffler (& rest of the aftermarket exh. system from fellow org-ie "Jime".) It was a 2K1 Maxima muffler. I think the inlet pipe was 2.25" & Budget Ex. gutted that & welded a 2.5" pipe in its place.

The resonator is located behind the main cat & sits in front on the rear wheels. It's long & cylindrical. Its purpose is to baffle the sound so it's not as loud. I don't find NOT having a resonator is that bad. That's all very personal & each person's tolerance to the "floor" noise level is quite different. Let's just say you can forget about listening to classical music with no resonator!
(There are pics on pg. 5 of my homepage that shows Budget's handywork.)

When I had my Budget installed, I made sure to tell my buddy about the small bracket that hangs down (it's closer to the engine than it is to the cat). It's a small bracket but obviously would vibrate against the pipe if not bent away (I had him cut it off with the torch). This might be your problem...

i put my y on in july and at first i had the noise, i think it is some of the valve noise reverberating through the straight pipe. the first week it is really noticable, but the noise starts to go down after that. anyway, its normal. i just got my intake and the sound is louder at wot than the y-pipe. oh and i hear that if you wrap the flex section in some sort of wrap it goes away, but it rusts the pipe. good luck kids.

Do you have a picture of this hanger looking at the underside of a Max (whether your own or someone else's). I'd like to id this on my car to see if it's the source of my noise.

Thx in advance.

Well I bolted on my 5th gen yesterday no problem. We found out that I have an exhaust leak because there is no gasket between the muffler and the resonator. Does anyone know if there is one there? If so what is the part number?

I suspect there is a gasket that goes there but I don't have a part #.

Anyway, as an FYI, I was at a Nissan dealer yesterday to pick up a gaskets for following spots: (1) y-pipe/cat, (2) cat/b-pipe, and (3) b-pipe/2K1 muffler (btw, I have no resonator any more).

The oem gaskets for #1 and #2 are all metal (maybe with rubber compound in between? can't really see it) & "diamond-shaped" . For #3, the parts guy pulled out a metal ring that looks nothing like a diamond-shaped gasket. It's just ring shaped! It is 2.25" dia. which will fit most mufflers but not mine b/c it had been modified with a 2.5" dia. inlet pipe. nuts man!

Check this out http://www.greghome.com/Greg's%20Gar...haustParts.htm

I believe there is a gasket (4th from bottom of list). Part# 20691-30P00.
