My started gets stuck!

Have any of you guys have any problems with the started getting stuck for about a second after turning the ignition on. For some reason this just started to happen last week. Every morning when I turn on my car my stated get stock for like a 1 or seconds and makes this horrible noise like if it was grinding somthing. Is there a way to fix it with out replacing it? Maybe some cleaning or somehing

I think someone switched your 'r' and 'd' keys...please check your keyboard and try again.

But if you mean starter...maybe it's just loose?

It's a common problem with the starter.

I lived with mine like that for 2 years.

I finally got around to changing it last weekend. Had the whole intake out to change the hard coolant pipes so I figured, why not do the starter too.

replacement one cost me $140 from autozone.

If you go to www.motorvate.ca, there's an article there about cleaning and regreasing the starter.

I figured replacing it was better since there was no way I was gonna take the car apart again to get at it.

Once you get to the old starter, its fairly simple to take out. You'll need a 12mm and 17mm socket. Deep half inch drive sockets work best as you'll probably need a breaker bar for the 17mm bolt. It was on pretty tight. Or if you only have a 3/8" rachet, slip a 2 foot pipe over it for more torque.

I also found it a good time to clean all that old grease off the tranny.

Have fun.

wow... $140 for just the starter?? I duno... that sounds too pricey than it should have been, especially if you installed it yourself.

Well, I checked most of the parts places online and the price ranged from $130-$200. So I figured paying $10 extra to get it that same day was fine.

Afterall... No starter, no car. And I wasn't gonna take the whole thing apart again just to save $10 bucks.

I believe PepBoys charges $240-50 installed.

my 95 maxima

my 95 maxima started making that grinding noise with the "started" about a month ago and lately, that grinding noise when i start the car has been getting quieter and sometimes it will never make a noise. Hopefully it wont start making that noise again.

Check your belts.

Grinding Noise = Belt

You have 2 belts, one that rotates alternator and A/C compressor, the other that rotates power steering.

Adjust them, if you don't know how, go buy Haynes manual for maxima, a good $15 investment.

I fried my starter because I too thought this was problem and kept cranking it up beyond the limit, cost me $85 to completely rebuild it.

hmmm i had a semi smiliar type-ish of problem-ish....

turns out the contacts which touch the rotating piece were really worn.

I took it to a starter specialist and he fixed it for 60$...

might be just the contacts...
