HELP ME PLEASE ! shuddering feeling when letting off gas

Ok i have a 95 max gle that i bought last november, around june this problem started small, but has grown more powerful since then.

Basically when i let off the gas to slow down the car seems to shudder like something is wrong in the transmission. or possibly CV joints? there is a slight thub thub sound that coincides with the shudder. and its grown more violent/powerful in the last 3 months.

Any suggestions? Im sure its not brakes becasue this happens without brakes being applied.

Many Thanks
BG

Maxima's from what I've heard normally jerk a little when you let off the gas. If it's becoming increasingly worse it might be your tranny or engine mounts.

Does it happen at slow speeds or high? If it's slow speeds I would think it's normal (but to what extent would tell you if a mount is bad or not). My car jerks too, sometimes pretty bad depending on how warm the engine is at slow speeds. I sure hope it's nothing serious. Hope this'll give you some insite to the real problem if any.

This shuddering occurs at lower speeds but sometimes at high speeds too, depends on how quick you let off the gas...

This is definately not normal... the car didnt do this for 4 months and after it started its gotten worse and worse.

The shudder seems to be in sequence with the wheels turning ... revving while idling when car is still and letting off gas doesnt make noise... so i am leaning towards transmission... i bet thats alot more expensive than motor mounts...

Any one else ever have this problem?, also the transmission fluid dipstick shows signs of overheating (burnt tranny fluid on dipstick kind of red/brown color) So im guessing its dying from abuse on me...

Damn i never even got to drive it that hard... maybe with the rebuild im expecting to have to do, i can get a VBmod & cooler or maybe even a 5 SPD!!

CLEAN YOUR THROTTLE BODY

Look here for instructions----> www.motorvate.ca

And definately get your engine mounts checked.

MY THROTLEBODY GLEAMS ITS SO SHINY! I CLEAN IT 3 TIMES A YEAR.

And the motor mounts arent the problem as i said... the shuddering doesnt happen when revving the motor and letting of the gas? Only when the wheels are turning --- transmission in motion ---- does it shudder.

If it was the motor mounts i would think the engine would at least shake the car or cause some vibration when idling and revving and letting off the gas!

OK so lets toss out the TB, It's clean..

You definately will NOT feel a defective motor mount by just free reving your engine. You need to put a load on it. By load I mean the car in gear, in motion, moving, ect...

To check your motor mounts, do this and have a friend with you. Open the hood and start the car. Put it in drive and put your foot firmly on the brake pedal. Now give the car some gas as if your taking off. Have your friend watch the engine. It shoudn't move all but slightly.

Next do the same thing only have the car in Reverse. This will check both front and rear mounts.

If you've got a broken mount, you'll see the engine lift up. Have it replaced and your shudder will go away.

Tom

P.S. I like the fact that your TB is cleaned 3X/year.

groovy im on my way to parking lot with friend in tow to test motor mounts... lets hope brakes hold and that the mounts are whats bad...

UPDATE: Ok, Just got back from parking lot, engine shifts roughly 10 degrees front and 10 degrees rear... so 20 degrees of movement. Is this normal? or are the motor mounts gone... if so how much $$ are motor mounts?

How many will i need?

Cattman has em for 275 UMMA Heavy Duty Polyeurathane motor mounts (set of 2)

Thanks Man

There are four mounts that I know of on the car. One on the left, one on the right, one in the front, and one in the back. As for the movement of the engine, I have no clue what is normal. The mounts Cattman sells are the front and rear ONLY. They don't sell heavy duty polyurethane side mounts. So if you were to replace them all (4), then you would have to either buy all OEM or the 2 sides OEM and the front/rear from Cattman. Keep in mind that many people who have had the Cattman mounts ended up taking them out because they said they were too "stiff" and it felt like it car was going to "shake apart". Try runnning a search on the mounts to get more info on them.

That doesn't sounds like there broken, but they may be worn out a bit. The VQ is planted pretty solid on it's mounts, the movement you describe may be a little bit much, but I'm not so sure that is your shuddering problem. When a mount breaks, you can see the engine lift up slightly. When it's that bad, you can definately feel it when you drive.
