automatic transmission: start on "2" to get extra torque?

aite i was readin some articles about gainin xtra torque by starting max on "2" or "D2" watever u wanna call... then shift back to "D" around 30 mph... is tat true?

or auto racers should jus leave it on "D" with overdrive off and press the gas petal all the way?

got tips starting faster?

if your racing first learn how to read the light. put it in "n" rev ot 2500 at green drop to "1" and stomp it. stay there till around 45. yes 45!! she can take it. then hit "2". when you hit bout65. yes 65!! she can do it hit "D" with overdrive off. its all about the timing. now normal driving i almost always use "2" its your strongest gear. and thats usually where your car shifts too to get your power to pass. in my opionon. hop this helps. holla back.

I seriously hope you're joking about putting it in neutral and dropping it into first... How many miles are on your current tranny? If you do that, my guess is not too many... Brake torqing from a stop to about 1700RPM's and then letting go of the brake and slowly applying the gas until you get traction is the best way... Manually shifting of course, start off in "1" with OD off and once you hit 5500RPMS, shift to second and once you hit 5800 revs shift to D and if you have gorilla ***** and run out 3rd, wait until 6500 RPMs or so before you put on OD... Mind you i never do this, but this is somewhat accurate from around the org

Hope this helps,

LEMAR

Wow this is short thread for that much BS to be flying around already. By the way you can hold first to 40mph, second to 80mph and third to 130mph...

You may not want to do that!

Starting the shifter in D2 does not give you extra torque. The torque is exactly the same as if you were to start in D D3 or D1 for that matter. The automatic shifter merely tells the transmission the highest gear it is allowed to be in. So regardless of whether you put it in D1, D2, D3, or D, you will always start off in 1st gear from a standstill. Therefore, your torque is the same.

There have been many threads on the subject of manually shifting an auto vs. leaving it in D. Do a search.

the torque stays the same irrelevant of what gear you in. what u mean is gear multiplication. then the strongest pull will be in 1st, since its the lowest gear (highest number). for example, if the first gear is 4.00, second is 2.50, third is 1.00, and fourth is 0.70. withe the differential gear = 4.00, then you just multiply each gear by the diffrential's number. the numbers are getting smaller, right? so, the strongest pull is always in first. all this is simplified for general consumption.

Check my sig for 1/4 mile time and 60'.

I leave my car in D with O/D on. There are no tricks you can do to get faster times with shifting.

Leave it in D. When you shift, you slow the shifting of an auto. I don't shift and my stock auto acheived 15.62 in the 1/4 (no intake and no y-pipe).
