help w/purchase decision

Hi,

I just registerd and have a question or two. I am looking at a 1998 Maxima w/90,000 miles. As near as I can tell it is a GXE model w/5sp transmission. The dealer is asking $11,500. I think this car has very few if any options.

Is $11,500 too much to ask? The thing looks clean but pretty plain.
Do Maximas hold up well so that 90,000 miles would not mean a worn out car?

What kind of maintenance issues or quirks do I need to look out for?

And, any other tips you care to pass along as I shop for a Maxima?

Thanks

Paul W.

put it this way, I bought my 98 se 5spd, with less than 30k for 12k. I'd say that car is worth less than 10.

I was actually just pricing my car. I definately think that is over priced. My FULLY LOADED 1997 Maxima SE is only work $11,000, and I only have 64K miles. That car should be well under $10K. $9K seems fair to me.

Later,

Yea, 9k would be ok... Although, have a Trusted Mechanic take a look at the car first, 90k miles is quite a bit and Maximas are reliable, but the brakes wear quickly, so have the brakes checked first, that could cost a good $1000 to replace the brakes. Also, check the clutch and any other places that might have been through some wear. But, It all depends on the previous driver, so check everything out anyways.

Thanks for the responses. Yea, I though $11.5K was too much considering the number of miles.

I'm in the car business and this dealer is ripping your head off. He probably has about 6 to 7 grand in this car and he is trying to make a killing off of it. Wait around for a couple of weeks(by then, it will be the end of the month and he will be desperate to move some cars) and offer him nothing more than 9 grand. If you play your cards right, he will sell it to you. Trust me, it works!

I wouldnt pay over $8k for a car with no options and 90,000 miles, thats IF the dealer offers some sort of warrenty. A nissan dealer usually wont sell a car with that high miles though. Just be carefull. You can find cars in bad condition with 30k miles and cars in great shape with 150k miles. Good luck!
